Purpose Statement
The job of Nutrition & Wellness Specialist is done for the purpose/s of assisting the Director of Nutrition & Wellness and the Nutrition Coordinator with the development and implementation of the procedures for the food and nutrition programs and services; developing and administering regulatory compliance training programs; managing the meal application processes; providing support to the food service activities at assigned location with specific responsibilities for directing activities and personnel at multiple sites to perform their functions in a safe and efficient manner; and providing written support to convey information and comply with mandated health standards and USDA guidelines for Child Nutrition Programs.
This job reports to Director of Nutrition & Wellness.
Essential Functions
- Assists with daily staffing activities and with hiring personnel for all nutrition positions for the purpose of maintaining adequate staffing.
- Conducts various functions to ensure mandated daily nutritional requirements for students are met and to assist with menu development (e.g. technical support of menu software, wellness policy implementation, maintaining menu documentation/specifications/product formulation statements, and procurement documentation).
- Coordinates, monitors, and ensure compliance with federal guidelines regarding the diversion, storage, and usage of the United States Department of Agriculture commodities.
- Monitors food and supply purchasing through approved vendors; reviews/maintains order guides, requests product specifications/product formulation statements/CN labels, approves product substitutions, and corresponds with designated vendor contact to address any concerns.
- Oversees free and reduced-price meal application processes for the purpose of integrating the use and application of technology and ensuring regulatory compliance.
- Participates in department meetings, in-service trainings, workshops, etc. (e.g. evaluator classes, Nutrition Academy, training site managers, Serv Safe Certification, etc.) for the purpose of conveying and/or gathering information required to perform job functions.
- Performs functions of other nutritional services positions, as needed within site and satellite sites for the purpose of ensuring adequate staff coverage within site operations.
- Prepares a variety of documentation (e.g. cumulative meal counts, reconciliation reports, handbooks, audit reports, power point presentations, etc) for the purpose of providing written support, compliance, and/or conveying information.
Other Functions
- Performs other related duties as assigned for the purpose of ensuring the efficient and effective functioning of the work unit.

Skills, Knowledge and Abilities
SKILLS are required to perform multiple tasks with a need to upgrade skills in order to meet changing job conditions. Specific skill based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: adhering to safety practices; planning and managing projects; preparing and maintaining accurate records; operating standard office equipment; using pertinent software applications; conducting meetings.
KNOWLEDGE is required to perform basic math, including calculations using fractions, percents, and/or ratios; read a variety of manuals, write documents following prescribed formats, and/or present information to others; analyze situations to define issues and draw conclusions. Responsibility
Responsibilities include: working under limited supervision following standardized practices and/or methods; directing other persons within a work unit; utilization of some resources from other work units is often required to perform the job’s functions. Work Environment
The usual and customary methods of performing the job’s functions require the following physical demands: significant lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling, some climbing and balancing, frequent stooping, kneeling, crouching, and/or crawling and significant fine finger dexterity. Generally the job requires 70% sitting, 15% walking, and 15% standing. The job is performed under temperature extremes and under conditions with exposure to risk of injury and/or illness. Applicant must have the ability to lift 50 pounds.
Experience: 1-2 years of job-related or internship-related experience within child nutrition is required.
Education: Bachelor's degree in job-related area.
