What you can expect in this role
As a Spectrum Intern, you’ll be essential to two teams — your respective department and your Intern peer group. Department and team-focused projects account for about 80% of your schedule. You’ll spend the other 20% on professional development sessions and networking activities, including the Kickoff Conference on May 28, webinars, community service, cross-functional project, and final presentations.
Internship responsibilities may include:
- About the Role Monitoring Alerts: Continuously monitor security alerts from various sources like SIEM, IDS/IPS, firewalls, and EDR.
- Incident Triage: Assist in the initial triage of security incidents, categorizing and prioritizing them based on severity and potential impact.
- Threat Analysis: Conduct preliminary analysis of security events to identify potential threats and vulnerabilities.
- Log Analysis: Review and analyze security logs from different systems and devices to detect suspicious activities.
- Documentation: Document incidents, findings, and actions taken during investigations. Maintain detailed and accurate incident reports.
- Incident Response: Support the incident response team in investigating and responding to security incidents, including data breaches, malware infections, and phishing attacks.
- Reporting: Assist in generating regular security reports and metrics for management.
- Continuous Learning: Stay informed about the latest security trends, technologies, and best practices by consuming published content and participating in training sessions and workshops.
- Collaboration: Work closely with other SOC team members, IT staff, and stakeholders to ensure effective communication and coordination in security operations.
- Technical Support: Provide technical support for security-related issues and assist in troubleshooting security incidents.
Here’s what it takes to get started
Required qualifications
- Must be enrolled in an accredited College or University graduating with a bachelor’s degree between December 2025 - May 2026
- Must have at least a 3.0 GPA or greater in current program
- Ability to travel locally to Spectrum Intern development events and activities throughout the program
- Authorization to work in the U.S. without restrictions or need for future sponsorship
Preferred qualifications
- Be comfortable with command-line interfaces (Windows, Linux, macOS, or any combination of those)
- Be familiar with scripting languages (PowerShell, Python3, etc.)
- Be versed in forensic analysis methodology for Windows systems (Mac/Linux forensics knowledge is a plus)
- Be acquainted with strategies and tools to rapidly analyze large sets of logs (such as Splunk, ELK, etc.)
- Successful candidates will have one or more of the following characteristics: Have an investigative mindset and a desire to find and stop evil
