Job Summary
The Pediatric Emergency Medicine APRN functions independently within parameters delineated by the supervising physician. The Pediatric Emergency Medicine APRN will assess, diagnose, and manage episodic illness, injuries, and acute exacerbations of chronic disease of the pediatric patient. Responsibilities include performing history and physical examinations; ordering and interpreting radiological and laboratory test results; treating minor injuries; prescribing medications; documenting patient care services within the EMR and departmental records; and performing procedures within scope of practice and demonstrated through competency. The Pediatric Emergency Medicine APRN reports to the Emergency Medicine APP Manager.
Job Specific Duties
- Performs comprehensive and problem focused history and physician examinations.
- Initiates emergency resuscitation and stabilization as necessary.
- Orders and interprets appropriate laboratory tests and diagnostic tests with education and experience with establish protocol in collaborative relationship with supervising physicians.
- Performs procedures as demonstrated through competency and identified in delineation of privileges.
- Works effectively with physicians and other health care professionals as a member or leader of a health care team or professional group.
- Participates in performance improvement activities, quality initiatives, and research.
- Accountable to follow up all Infection Control standards and ensures proper use of Personal Protective Equipment per policy and procedures to ensure safe patient care.
- Accountable for maintaining current expertise and skills in order to facilitate a high quality of clinical performance and to promote professional growth.
- Completes clinical documentation accurately and in a timely manner.
- Precepts APP new hires and students.
- Writes orders, monitors/alters drug therapies, and performs other procedures with education and experience within established protocol in collaborative relationship with the supervising physician.

Minimum Job Requirements
- Master's degree in nursing or Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) from an accredited school
- Current Florida APRN license - maintain active and good standing throughout employment
- Certification by the American Nurse Credentialing Center (ANCC), American Academy of Nurse Practitioner Certification Center (AANP), Pediatric Nursing Certification Board (PNCB), or National Certification Corporation (NCC)
- American Heart Association BLS - maintain active and in good standing throughout employment
- American Heart Association PALS - maintain active and in good standing throughout employment
- Successful completion of Credentialing by Nicklaus Children's Hospital Medical Administration required
- Level II Background Check
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Pediatric Urgent Care or Pediatric Emergency Department experience preferred.
- Acute Care Pediatric Nurse Practitioner Certification preferred.
- Able to work weekends, evenings, nights, holidays, with varying schedules.
- Able to work independently and collaboratively with other disciplines using discretion and independent judgement.
- Able to recognize subtle changes in the patient's condition and to adapt care based on those changes.
- Able to interpret, adapt and react calmly under stressful conditions.
- Able to communicate verbally and in writing.
- Able to maintain confidentiality of sensitive information.
- Ability to problem solve to formulate a plan of care and evaluate the patient's response to care.
