employees. Currently, we have an opening for a full-time Animal
Health Technician located on Plum Island in Orient, NY. The Animal
Health Technician will work in a team of Veterinarians, Animal Health
Technicians, and Animal Care Technicians to support research with large
animals.
POSITION DUTIES & REQUIREMENTS:
- Provide Animal Health Technician support to the veterinarians
and animal care staff
- Under the direction of the veterinarians, conduct animal clinical
rounds to ensure compliance with all animal welfare requirements,
prescribed treatment plans, and IACUC-approved animal research
protocols
- Assist animal care staff in collecting tissue samples and
administering drugs under the direction of veterinarians
- Assist veterinarians and animal care staff with making drug
cocktails for use in animal procedures
- Don appropriate PPE in biocontainment areas and follow all safety
measures for biosecurity
- Assist in animal health record keeping
- Update daily health reports and notify respective parties
- Animal intake exams, microchipping
- Weekly large animal exams and evaluation
- Prepare sampling material for staff
- Prepare and administer animal treatments
- Prepare, administer, and monitor animal sedation
- Controlled drug substance coordination
- Parasitology diagnostics
- Oversee animal enrichment program
- Drug and supply inventory and ordering
- Backup subject matter expert for blood collection procedures
- Generate forms and write/edit/update Standard Operating Procedures
- Complete all assigned training
- Assist in training and on-boarding new staff members
- Participate in and present at staff meetings and trainings
- Order and inventory materials and supplies for research studies
- Perform other duties as assigned
REQUIRED EXPERIENCE & SKILLS:
- AA or BS degree in animal science or related science preferred
- Background knowledge of working with research animals
- Capable of performing basic animal care duties with guidance
- Ability to be trained to achieve AALAS ALAT certification
- Effective verbal and written communication
- Employee is often required to lift and carry feed materials weighing
up to 75 pounds and to handle such items as feed trays weighing up
to 20 pounds.
- Work requires continuous standing and walking on concrete and/or a
slippery floor due to nature of the work with animals.
- Employee must have strength and agility to restrain strong and very
active animals which weight approximately 500 pounds or more.
- Must be able to receive and maintain a Personal Security Level 3
(PSL-3) clearance and participate in the Occupational Health/Safety
Programs.
- Must be able to pass a criminal background check and drug screening.
