General Statement of Duties
The City of Jerome is a dynamic organization which positively affects our citizens every day. Every position within the City is expected to be a leader within our organization, as well as in our community. Responsible for the care and wellbeing of the dogs in the Jerome Animal Shelter; helps supports the animal shelter volunteer program and develops and maintains relationships with various rescue organizations and humane societies.
Supervision Received
Works with the Animal Control Officer and reports to the Patrol Captain.
Supervision Exercised
Exercises supervision over part-time or volunteer animal shelter workers as directed.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Ensures all dogs in the shelter are fed and cared for on a daily basis under the set standard (example: feeding appropriate amounts of food).
- Maintains accurate records on all dogs in the care of the shelter, including but not limited to intake information, vaccination information, behavior information etc.
- Maintains the shelter office and keeps it organized and clean.
- Maintains cleanliness of animal shelter according to set standards and helps to maintain all shelter grounds.
- Monitors health of all dogs in the shelter and responds to any medical needs of the dogs in a timely and appropriate manner.
- Keeps supervisors apprised of any supplies that are needed by the shelter.
- Greets the public, screens potential adopters and assists in adoption of animals.
- Accepts stray animals being brought to the shelter by citizens or police.
- Answers telephone calls and assists citizens with information relating to animal matters; take messages for the Animal Control Officer; follows up on any messages left on voicemail for the shelter; checks local paper to see if any dogs in the shelter are reported as missing in the paper or on various websites.
- Helps to maintain inventory of keys for the shelter.
- Performs functions that support the animal shelter adoption program.
- Coordinates with local veterinarians to ensure appointments for health, spay/neuter, or other needs are met.
- Works closely with various rescues, humane societies, and foster homes for placement of dogs.
- Receives and distributes daily list of available dogs at the shelter to use to communicate with various organizations in the hopes of having dogs accepted into rescues, humane societies or foster homes.
- Prepares dogs for transportation to various rescues, humane societies and foster homes.
- Helps to maintain various websites in promoting the dogs at the shelter for adoption and keeps all information current.
- May administer vaccinations to dog and de-worming medication and treat any injured or sick dogs.
- Assists the Animal Control officer in any capacity as requested; this may include animal restraint during euthanasia.
Peripheral Duties
- Helps coordinate shelter volunteer program as directed.
- Aids in or spearheads fundraising events, adoption days or other special events in support of the shelter.
- Makes presentations regarding the shelter to various organizations as requested.
- Acts as an ambassador for the shelter to the general public.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Must be 18 years or older at the time of employment.
- Working knowledge of methods used in the safe, effective and humane handling and restraint of dogs, including those that are sick, injured, aggressive and/or difficult to control.
- Knowledge of standard safety precautions and equipment used in animal care, control and shelters.
- Ability to uphold dog adoption standards in accordance with Jerome Municipal Code and Jerome Animal Shelter Policy to assure the safety and health of citizens and animals in the City.
- Ability to remain calm and composed when confronted by angry citizens; deal tactfully, courteously and firmly with the public.
- Ability to work independently with little direction.
- Ability to work all shifts, including early mornings, late evenings, weekends and holidays.
- Must be able to read, write and speak English.
- Must be able to operate a computer and learn software programs needed for the operation of the shelter.
- Ability or willingness to learn how to identify breeds of dogs.
Acceptable Education and Experience
- High School diploma or GED equivalent.
- One (1) year professional or volunteer experience with care, feeding and/or handling of animals in a facility that cares for animals such as animal shelter, kennel, veterinary hospital, boarding or pet day care facility or pet store preferred.
- Some experience within an office environment.
Special Qualifications
- Applicants must be of good character and may not have any felony convictions at any time nor a conviction for any misdemeanor sex crime, crime of deceit, crime of violence, crime against an animal, or drug offense within five (5) years prior to application.
Essential Physical Abilities
- Must be physically able and willing to handle dogs of all sizes, weights and temperaments, knowing that some dogs may be aggressive.
- While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to sit and talk and hear. The employee is occasionally required to stand, walk, use hands to finger, handle, or operate objects, controls, or tools listed above. Reach with hands and arms, climb or balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl, and smell. The employee must read and write to maintain documents of animals brought to the shelter and animals that leave the shelter.
- The employee must occasionally lift, and/or move more than 75 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
Appointees will be subject to completion of a standard probationary period.
