About the Job
The Assistant Golf Course Superintendent reports directly to the Golf Course Superintendent. Under the Superintendent's supervision, the Assistant Superintendent directs and participates in the maintenance of the golf course tees, greens, fairways, and cart paths; supervises the maintenance and repair of motorized and other mechanical equipment; and does related work as required. The Assistant Superintendent may serve in the Superintendent's capacity during his/her absence. It is the responsibility of the Assistant Superintendent to assist the Superintendent in all capacities, ensuring that each employee in maintenance is Competent (Knowledge/Skills) and the Culture (Attitudes/Habits) is proactive and mission driven.
Responsibilities:
- Assists in planning and supervising the maintenance of greens, tees, and fairways
- Schedules work and supervises the employees and the use of the equipment
- Instructs equipment operators on the operation and care of mowing and other equipment
- Supervises pesticide applications and/or operates and calibrates pesticide application equipment
- Supervises and participates in the operation and maintenance of pumps and in the maintenance of irrigation and drainage systems
- Assists in personnel management and evaluation, employee safety, and personnel discipline
- Modifies the daily work schedule based on professional interpretation
- Hires and trains new employees and handles terminations if necessary
- Meets with Superintendent on a weekly basis to discuss employee performance, scheduling, goals, etc.
- Mows greens, tees, fairways, and roughs with reel, rotary, and gang units
- Operates all types of equipment and a variety of powered and non-powered hand tools to carry out tasks such as, but not limited to, spraying, aerifying, mowing, weed eating, edging, blowing, and pruning
- Sets up and prepares course daily
- Maintains bunkers, bunker surrounds, pond banks, creeks, and fence lines
- Performs hand watering practices in accordance to personnel, weather, and conditions
- Keeps golf course, grounds, and structures clean and presentable
- Assists in repair projects/improvements such as drainage and irrigation repair and installation, sodding/seeding, and hand watering responsibilities
- Plants, prunes, and removes trees and shrubs as needed
- Removes leaves, debris, and under-brushing
- Spot sprays weeds and applies fertilizers on golf course and grounds
- Reports problems concerning equipment to the equipment manager or superintendent
- Keeps all equipment, transport vehicles, restrooms, break room, and maintenance facility clean and presentable
- Provides basic preventative maintenance on equipment as directed by the equipment manager
- Must adhere/enforce OSHA standards
- Performs other duties as needed or required

Qualifications:
- High school diploma required
- Working knowledge of the maintenance of golf course tees, fairways, and greens; seeding and maintenance practices for golf course turf; planting, cultivating, pruning, and caring for plants, shrubs, and trees; characteristics and proper use of various fertilizers and soil conditioners; herbicides and pest control methods and materials; drainage control methods; and irrigation systems, including wells, pumps, and automatic controls
- Ability to schedule and supervise maintenance work to achieve the most efficient utilization of workers and equipment
- Maintain effective employee and public relations
- Availability to work weekends, holidays, and extended hours as needed
- Ability to acquire state certification or licensing as a pesticide applicator
- Knowledge of the game of golf from rules to regulations, to a player point-of-view
- Valid driver’s license, current automobile insurance, and reliable personal transportation required

Working Conditions:
