The anticipated salary range for this role is between $157,000.00 and $210,000.00. The specific salary offered to an applicant will be based on their individual qualifications, experiences, and an analysis of the current compensation paid in their geography and the market for similar roles at the time of hire. The role may also be eligible for an annual discretionary incentive award. In addition to cash compensation, SMBC offers a competitive portfolio of benefits to its employees.
Role Description
The SMBC Group is a top-tier global financial group. We are seeking an Assistant Tax Counsel, Vice President to perform all functions of a Tax Attorney including review documentation and transactions, analyze new tax laws, assist with tax compliance and tax audits, assist with strategies to reduce tax costs and tax risks etc.
Role Responsibilities:
- Review legal documentation from a tax perspective and support transactions (i.e. credit agreements, ISDAs)
- Conduct corporate domestic and international tax research and writing (i.e. memos to file) including researching tax treaties and PE issues.
- Provide US withholding tax advice to tax staff and front office
- Review tax planning ideas and assist with tax structuring needs.
- Provide tax and financial audit support for various US entities in response to IRS/State Tax and financial auditor inquires.
- Answer ad hoc corporate tax questions for front office, senior management and tax compliance colleagues.
Qualifications and Skills
- Knowledge and experience of tax law especially international tax, taxation of financial services, withholding tax, credit agreements and ISDAs.
- Knowledge of tax structuring and tax planning
- Demonstrated focus on ownership of responsibilities, follow-up and customer relationship management
- Strong client focus mind-set with proficiency in consulting/advising customers (both external and internal), answering inquiries and providing information.
- Strong critical thinking ability and problem resolution skills.
