About the Job
Merrick is seeking an experienced Associate of Strategic Development (ASD) with a background in laboratory projects, environments, and programs to provide strategy and business development services for our Life Science Business Unit. The ASD will lead and/or support various strategic initiatives related to client engagement, market penetration, market expansion, new markets, competitive intelligence. In addition, this ASD will have responsibilities for supporting proposal development and other technical deliverables on behalf of multiple disciplines within the life sciences practice. Because of the strategic nature of this position, the ideal candidate will be located in the Washington, DC area.
Typical annual pay range for this position is $150,000.00 - $180,000.00. Pay offered may vary depending on job related knowledge, skills, and experience.
WHAT YOU'LL DO:The ASD will integrate and collaborate with Life Sciences practice senior management, Discipline Leads, and Program and Project Managers to: assist in client engagement; develop competitive proposals for laboratory design, laboratory commissioning, and biosafety and biosecurity consulting services; provide project management support; and serve as an expert technical writer to lead the creation and management of project documentation that is of high-quality and consistency. The ASD will leverage knowledge and experience of the life sciences, laboratory environments, and biosafety and biosecurity to provide strategic guidance to identify and capture business opportunities from new and existing Clients, increase team efficiency, and ensure the quality control of project deliverables. The successful candidate will report to the senior vice president and life sciences business unit leader supporting initiatives for various markets related to life sciences, laboratories, and biorisk management.
The successful candidate will:
- Work directly with the senior vice president and life sciences business unit leader, and other leaders, toward the development of strategy initiatives focused on market penetration, market expansion, new markets, and competitive intelligence
- Performs research through a variety of channels to amass strategic information to inform decision-making by the life sciences leadership team; report regularly to Merrick senior management on project performance
- Supports strategy and content development of key proposals and other client-facing products and deliverables

- Lead QA/QC reviews of project deliverables; Implement quality control measures in accordance with Merrick and Client and business unit requirements

- Master and comply with Merrick’s project management systems, procedures and reporting protocols, and marketing and branding efforts.
- Assist in the day-to-day activities of technical project staff, consultants, and contractors.
- Apply analytical skills to evaluate market trends, identify business opportunities, create project strategies and solutions that meet or exceed Client and business unit requirements.
- Bachelor of Science in the Life Sciences with at least ten (10) years of experience.
- Minimum of eight (8) years of business development and client management experience within the life sciences.
- Minimum of eight (8) years of experience creating and managing the development of competitive proposals within the life sciences.
- Minimum of eight (8) years of project management experience.
- Intermediate to senior-level working knowledge of emerging technologies (e.g., human gene therapy), biosafety and biosecurity, and laboratory design and commissioning within varying Client industries (e.g., government, academic, industrial) and relevant safety and security regulations and guidelines.
- Expert-level scientific technical writing experience in the life sciences, laboratory operations, biosafety and biosecurity, and/or global health security.
- Microsoft Office and Adobe Suite expert-user.
- Possess or ability and willingness to obtain a low-level security clearance for with the US Federal Government.
- Be available to do minimal travel to Merrick offices and Client sites.
- Masters of Science in a Life Sciences or technical discipline (e.g., biology, chemistry, engineering, or related field).
- Experience in market analysis and strategic planning.
- Experience in the US Federal Government bid and proposal process, particularly with the USDA, DOD, NIH, or CDC.
- Experience with complex laboratory planning and design, laboratory operations and biosafety consulting projects.
- Local candidates to the Washington, D.C. area preferred. Relocation may be considered.
