Trust Fund positions are unique to the Smithsonian. They are paid for from a variety of sources, including the Smithsonian endowment, revenue from our business activities, donations, grants and contracts. Trust employees are not part of the civil service, nor does trust fund employment lead to Federal status. The salary ranges for trust positions are generally the same as for federal positions and in many cases trust and federal employees work side by side. OVERVIEW

Associates curates and produces informative, enlightening, entertaining, and insightful programs inspired by and amplifying the full character of the Smithsonian’s collections, exhibitions, and research. Audiences of all ages explore topics in scientific, historic, artistic, and cultural expression. Through their participation, members and the public become involved in the Institution’s work, creating broad interest and support for the Smithsonian. The Smithsonian Associates is a financially independent educational non-profit business activity within the Smithsonian: funding is derived entirely from ticket sales, tuition, membership fees and fundraising.
The incumbent will serve as an intermittent Audio Visual Technician providing a wide range of professional audiovisual technical services and support. Smithsonian Associates is regularly associated with presentations to the public involving dignitaries and performers of international prominence. Necessarily, such service must reflect consummate expertise in its execution and the equipment used. Work will be performed within the Washington Metropolitan area in a variety of Smithsonian and nongovernment locations. Assignments are communicated in writing and verified verbally with the Venue Coordinator. Performance is reviewed in terms of quality support, attention to detail, punctuality, professionalism, effective communication skills, and overall positive effect on the presentation.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- The incumbent performs as projectionist for technically complex and/or artistically demanding events. Operates digital and 35mm and 16mm projectors. Manages simple and complex audio systems. Modifies equalizers and operates/engineers complex audio systems for live musical and theatrical performances, lectures, and conferences. Situations with these requirements are one time occurrences and require a combination of advanced technical skills and subjective artistic talent in order to plan, set up, run through and operate each event. The skills for both lighting and audio engineering are almost always required simultaneously. The incumbent sets up, adjusts and manipulates sounds systems in spaces that can hold 60-1,500 people for concerts and receptions.
- The incumbent moves, sets up and takes down equipment for events; stores equipment in assigned locations; coordinates with the Venue Coordinator prior to the event to verify that the necessary equipment is on hand; verifies that the equipment is in good working order prior to the event, and notifies the supervisor of defective or faulty equipment. While presenters and the Venue Coordinator determine most equipment needs in advance, incumbent determines on location any equipment adjustments based on last minute changes or additions. Executes verbal and written lighting cues during the actual performance while on occasions operating a five-channel intercom telex systems. Incumbent must be onsite at all times to operate the equipment and handle any unexpected developments
QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS
- Knowledge of the processes, methodologies, personnel, equipment, and related requirements involved in planning and carrying out the steps necessary to produce well-presented audio visual productions, such as concerts, lectures, receptions, and small theatrical productions.
- The incumbent has expertise in setting up, adjusting, and manipulating sound systems for a variety of concerts, lectures, and other events. Skill in using multi-channel audio mixing boards and a variety of special effects audio equipment.
- Must possess skills in operating and setting up front and rear large screen video projection; operates and adjusts 16mm and 35mm silent and sound motion picture projectors and screens, operates motion picture and still projectors.
- The incumbent operates manual and portable 52 circuit dual dimmer lighting board controlling stage lighting system; interprets complex written lighting plots, as well as verbal instructions from presenters/performers. Installs, repairs, gels, hangs, and focuses different stage lights; executes verbal and written lighting cues during the performances.
- The incumbent must demonstrate skills in communicating effectively and presenting a professional demeanor with a wide variety of performers, Smithsonian senior executives, staff, private sector professionals, and media representatives.
