BUS DRIVER
JOB DESCRIPTION
QUALIFICATIONS:
1. Possess valid Mississippi Commercial Driver’s License with a passenger and safety endorsement.
2. Possess valid bus driver’s card issued by the State Department of Education.
3. Meet all DOT physical and mental health requirements as required by law and Board policy.
4. Must be 18 years of age.
5. Negative drug and alcohol testing prior to employment mandatory.
6. Obtain clear child abuse, law enforcement, and other background checks.
7. Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Board may find appropriate and acceptable.
REPORTS TO: Transportation Supervisor
SUPERVISES: Bus Monitor--when assigned to bus
JOB GOAL: To provide safe and efficient transportation so that students may enjoy the fullest advantage from the district’s curriculum and extracurricular program.
PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. Obey all traffic laws:
A: Stop at all stop signs and red lights.
B: Don’t exceed posted speed zones.
2. Maintain discipline when students are on the bus within legal limits:
A: Students must be seated.
B: No eating, drinking, smoking, etc.
C: Write referrals for all student violations, within reason.
D: Assign BOYS to one side and GIRLS to the other side.
E: Noise level at reasonable tolerance level.
F: Never touch a student in an effort to discipline him or her.
3. Observe all mandatory safety regulation for school buses, both districts and state:
A: Speed limit for route is 45 m.p.h., or posted speed limit.
B: The speed limit for activity trips is 50 m.p.h.
C: In the McComb School District you never cross a railroad track. When you go out of town and have to cross a railroad track you must observe the proper procedures.
4. Operate on assigned schedule:
A: Maintain the same pick up times daily.
B: Do not make any new stops without first clearing it with the supervisor.
C: Let students off at their assigned stops only, if possible
D: Students must have a special request or a note signed by the principal to get off at another bus stop.
5. Keep assigned bus clean:
A: Sweep bus daily.
B: Wash bus weekly or as needed.
C: Check the interior of your bus for cut or worn seat covers, and report them.
6. Check bus before each operation:
A: Check all lights (headlights, clearance, turn signals, etc.).
B: Check tires for flats.
C: Clean all mirrors, windshield and back glass.
D: Check your warning light system.
E: Report all mechanical problems to the mechanics.
F: Start your bus 5 minutes before departure time.
G: While doing bus check observe any damages.
7. Notify the proper authority in case of mechanical failures or lateness:
A: Mechanic at 684-8260 or 684-0177.
B: Transportation supervisor will notify schools, police, wrecker, etc.
8. Exercise responsible leadership when on school trips in or out of the district:
A: All rules apply on activity trips that apply to your daily transportation of students.
9. Transport only authorized students:
A: If a new student is at one of your stops, and doesn’t have a note. Get the child’s name and address and report it to your supervisor.
B: Parents are not allowed on the bus, school officials, police are the only exceptions.
10. Report all ACCIDENTS no matter how minor:
A: If you’re involved in an accident call the Transportation Office.
B: Follow the district policy on bus accidents.
C: Get the name, age and seat number of all the children on your bus.
11. Is courteous to co-workers, students, parents and administrators:
A: Treats parents and students with respect.
12. Is prompt and follows the rules in their handbook:
A: Must clock in 15 minutes prior to departure time, this allows you enough time to do your daily bus inspection.
B: NO eating, drinking, smoking or use of unacceptable language, etc.
C: Do not get into verbal conflicts with parents. Be courteous and report the incident to the supervisor.
13. Perform all other related tasks as assigned, including but not limited to the following:
A: Fuel your bus as needed and park it.
B: Attend staff development meetings.
C: Conduct bus evacuation drills at school sites.
TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: Salary and work year to be established by the Board of Trustees.
EVALUATION: Performance of this job will be evaluated annually in accordance with provisions of the Board’s policy on Evaluation of Classified Personnel.
