Battery Reliability Engineer
We are looking for a dedicated and skilled Battery Reliability Engineer to join our Energy Technology business group. The successful candidate will play a key role in ensuring the reliability, safety, and optimized performance of our battery technology. This position is responsible for conducting reliability risk assessments and Design for Reliability (DfR) initiatives, overseeing the execution of testing, analyzing data, diagnosing root causes of battery failures, and developing strategies to improve reliability. The role reports to the Engineering Director or Supervisor.
Key Responsibilities
- Reliability Assessment: Design and implement processes for assessing cell, module, and system reliability across various products using Li-ion cells, such as Energy Storage Systems (ESS) and IoT devices.
- Collaboration & Metrics Development: Partner with product design teams to establish performance and reliability metrics, fostering a collaborative development process.
- Battery Technology Expertise: Build and apply expertise in battery chemistries and technologies, with a focus on reliability and real-world performance.
- Performance Analysis & Predictive Modeling: Leverage statistical analysis to identify battery performance trends and implement predictive models to enhance reliability.
- Validation Oversight: Lead validation processes, supporting team members to ensure high standards and escalating any concerns as necessary.
- Data Management: Maintain accurate, detailed records of battery performance and reliability data for reporting and analysis.
- Risk & Failure Analysis: Provide insight during risk assessments, FMEA/DFMEAs, and design reviews. Investigate failure modes, identify root causes, and recommend corrective actions.
- Reliability Improvement: Develop and execute strategies for improving battery reliability, including advancements in manufacturing processes and selection of high-performing battery options.
- Project Management: Oversee third-party resources, including labs and consultants, for project deliverables, managing scope, contracts, and report review.
- Product Development Support: Contribute to product development planning, ensuring schedule adherence, cost management, and design compliance.
- Mentorship: Mentor and guide junior engineers to support their professional growth.
Minimum Qualifications
- Education: Master's degree in Reliability Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, or a related field.
- Experience: 7+ years in battery reliability engineering, ideally within the automotive or energy storage industries.
- Track Record: Proven experience in designing and implementing successful battery reliability programs.
Preferred Qualifications
- Advanced Degree: PhD in Reliability Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, or a related field.
- Certifications: Certification in Reliability Engineering.
- Additional Experience: Experience in power electronics or renewable energy product validation.
Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities
- Comprehensive understanding of battery safety, cell chemistry, and environmental factors impacting battery performance.
- Expertise in reliability failure modes of power electronic technologies and associated failure mechanisms.
- Proficiency with statistical analysis tools for performance data trend identification.
- Knowledge of relevant test standards, including IEEE, JEDEC, and IEC.
- Ability to work effectively with cross-functional teams and manage multiple projects with competing deadlines.
- Strong communication skills to present complex information clearly and concisely.
- Excellent decision-making abilities.
