This position is necessary for the efficient workflow of the Cataloging and Metadata Services department (CaMS). It manages preliminary work for other members of the department, so their work can be carried out more efficiently. In addition, the position shelves books in a short-term location, helps compact books on those shelves to free-up space, and ensures those books are sequential order. The position also includes member copy cataloging.
Responsibilities:The position requires competency using the OCLC database. The incumbent would be expected to successfully catalog items using member copy standards. This requires knowledge of Library of Congress subject headings, MARC editing protocols, RDA guidelines, local practices and procedures. The position requires the ability to search online documentation to find such practices and procedures.
The incumbent must be familiar with established rules and procedures for cataloging material using the Library of Congress standards in order to catalog with accuracy. Additionally, knowledge of the MARC format is necessary to complete the bibliographic records. Basic knowledge of discovery systems is required, as is general knowledge of the Google suite of applications. The incumbent must be able to successfully determine the appropriate courses of action in complex bibliographic searches.
While this position reports to the supervisor of the Western Languages Cataloging Team in CaMS, the incumbent will have regular interaction with units in Finance and Acquisitions. Additionally, there will be almost daily interaction with other teams in CaMS.
For 60% of the job, the incumbent will be expected to make independent decisions while searching for cataloging copy as well as performing copy cataloging. The expectation is that cataloging errors will be identified and corrected, using knowledge of standard procedures and local documentation.
This position is responsible for the inflow and outflow of material into the department, and the incumbent will have to organize and direct others in inventory allocation and shelving. Furthermore, the incumbent will be responsible for keeping the “ready-to-catalog” material at an acceptable level so that the department’s work can continue in a timely fashion. This position will be responsible for monitoring and prioritizing the workflow of incoming material.
Incumbent must be able to articulate problems and inconsistencies with workflow processes, cataloging duplication, and access errors. Issues in any of these categories can be complicated; often the material is in a language other than English, and the incumbent must be able to do preliminary investigation before involving other units for resolution. The position would require the ability to use online forms with competency.
Qualifications:- Bachelor’s degree or equivalent
- 1-3 years working in an academic or library environment
