Responsibilities:
What you'll be challenged to do:
TranSystems has an immediate opening for a Bridge Engineer who qualifies as a NBIS Bridge Inspection Team Leader. The successful candidate for this position will primarily be responsible for leading the field inspection and completion of the inspection reports for complex bridges located throughout the State of Ohio. Depending on the level of experience and desire, an entry level project management position may be possible. Additional duties may include the performance of structural design/analysis, preparation of load rating reports, construction documents, project specifications, and quantity/cost estimates. Day to day assignments and technical guidance will be provided by Project Engineers and Project Managers. TranSystems has a National Bridge Inspection Practice, and the successful candidate will have the opportunity to work at the National level for transportation agency clients in states across the country, including Michigan, West Virgina, Pennsylvania, Illinois, Iowa, Missouri, Kansas, Massachusetts, Maine, Connecticut, New Jersey, Maryland, Delaware, North Carolina, South Carolina, Florida, Texas, and California.
The right candidate will be enthusiastic and passionate about focusing on the inspection and evaluation of in-service bridges. There are opportunities to be trained and/or join TranSystems’ growing National Rope Access Team. There are also opportunities to be involved in TranSystems' UAS (drone) inspection program.
General duties include, but are not limited to:
- Performing bridge inspection assignments on complex and signature structures.
- Documenting clear and detailed inspection findings.
- Preparing concise structure inspection evaluation reports.
- Planning and preparation for bridge inspections.
- Scheduling and coordinating field operations with subcontractors and subconsultants.
- Preparation of cost proposals and labor-hour estimates.
- Assisting in the preparation of business proposals and safety plans.
- Performing load rating analyses.
- Participating in bridge design assignments involving contract plan preparation and specifications, design calculations, calculation of quantities and development of cost estimates.
- Responsible for accuracy of engineering design, reports, load ratings, and plans, quality presentation, thoroughness and follow-through, and efficient conformance to budgets, schedules, and company standards.
Qualifications:
What you bring to our firm:
- Bachelor’s degree in civil and/or structural engineering with an emphasis in structures from an ABET-accredited university or college.
- Registration as a licensed Professional Engineer in OH.
- Completion of the NHI Safety Inspection of In-Service Bridges (FHWA-NHI-130055).
- Experience as a Bridge Inspection Team Leader in Ohio.
- Team oriented engineer with strong communication skills.
- Experience and training for the operation of bucket trucks, manlifts, and under bridge inspection vehicles.
- Working knowledge of MS Office Suite (Word, Excel, etc.).
- Individuals should have experience in reading plans and shop drawings and evaluating contractor compliance with construction plans and specifications.

- Able and willing to travel within the continental United States to perform bridge inspections.
- Physically capable of performing field work including working at heights, carrying ladders and gear, working in adverse weather conditions, etc.
- Valid Driver’s License.

What we’d prefer for you to bring to our firm:
- Completion of the NHI Fracture Critical Inspection Techniques for Steel Bridges (FHWA-NHI-130078).
- Experience with engineering design packages such as MicroStation, AASHTOWare BrR. Staad.Pro, MDX, MathCAD, LUSAS and/or other structural analysis software systems.
- Structural engineering background and experience with structural engineering design drawings, specifications, and cost estimates.
- Rope access experience or an interest in learning rope access techniques (SPRAT, IRATA).
- Licensed drone pilot – successful completion of FAA Part 107 and drone experience.Experience with Microsoft Excel including basic programming ability.
Work Environment:
- The work environment will include a mixture of office and field work.
- The work environment characteristics and physical demands described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally exposed to moving mechanical parts and outside weather conditions. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate, however, construction and field assignments can be severe (i.e. airport noise, inside factories, construction equipment, jack hammers, etc).
- The employee frequently is required to stand, walk, talk or hear, and drive a car. The employee is occasionally required to reach with hands and arms; climb or balance; and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 10 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include ability to adjust focus.
