MSP: James
HM: Blaise Peters
We are seeking: A Data Project Manager with a Bachelor's degree (I will ask how many yrs exp!). Top Skills: Expert skill in SQL, Tableau and Excel including creating and maintaining dashboards from scratch! Critical to be able to create the wireframe on their own without meetings with Stakeholders/committees to define the requirements before the work will start. If they are unable to do this on their own NOT A FIT! Comfort dealing with LARGE data sets. Fraud Experience is a Bonus. Kibana is a PLUS. Track multiple projects simultaneously. Backgrounds to consider incl: eCommerce, order data, retail exp = makes an easier transition. However, he needs the technical skills, so if someone has that in pulling order data, he can teach the fraud part. Multiple Interviews incl: one technical of Tableau and Excel.
HM Summary : Possibility of extension. Internally a Data PM. Data person with dual role 1) creating and maintaining KPI dashboards to use/share w/exec team for updates. Needs extensive SQL exp and extensive Tableau exp, creating, maintaining, diagnosing dashboards 2) Need someone that can do Ad Hoc query. In fraud, everything is NEW. Need someone that can dig into problems, define the size of an issue, how large is the problem, how much money and resources should they spend to solve the problem. They don't have great data dictionaries of their tables, so they have to find that themselves, find where that data resides.
Need significant Excel skill. Often instead of creating a dashboard on an ad hoc issue, they'll put it in excel, exemplify and stratify the data here.
Large data sets, sometimes pulling one month to one year of data.
Large entity, so even 1 mo data is a LOT.
Being able to track progress and report it, there will be multiple projects, investigations, requests to create of modify tableau tracking or dashboards. Needs to be able to show where they are, communicate it. Some require reaching out to data teams that maintain the tables for permissions and implementations project that needs to be managed. Track multiple projects simultaneously.
Reinforcing this is a one-off process, a creative process, sometimes an iterative problem because they "don't know what they don't know, so sometimes taking multiple tries to figure out what the process is. Needs to have an appetite for an iterative process. They DO NOT have a committee or stakeholder meeting when creating dashboards. Needs to be able to create the wireframe on their own without this. If accustomed to 3-5 meetings to define the requirements to create a wireframe before the work has started, this is NOT the role for that type of candidate.
Interview with Blaise and with another member of his team, if those go well they will interview over Tableau and Excel. Will need to be able to download the practice (data to write SQL), one hour exam. Make sure you save time for BOTH exercises, don't spend 45 min on one and leave yourself 15 min for the other.
Probably more operational than financial background is helpful. Fraud is ideal, but if not operational. Less financial and more investigative. It is order data they are dealing with, ex: what item was purchased from what IP address, what quantity, what did they use to connect to their website, etc.
They use vertica overlay over the back of their website to access production data. They have copies of production data.
If they are very strong in SQL and Tableau and Excel, great. Risk/Fraud is a bonus. Kibana is a PLUS bc it allows some backend access to the data.
Background eCommerce, order data, retail exp makes an easier transition. However, he needs the technical skills, so if someone has that in pulling order data, he can teach the fraud part.
Backfill.
Tableau dashboard loaded to connect to the data set.
There will be a data set and a tableau desktop, and you will create a tableau dashboard from there.
Order data is across Samsung.com in US only. Anything you can order there all those LOB's are part of their risks. Fraud = stolen credit card purchase, they cover that. Over the last couple of years, there is also "abuse where the real person is taking advantage of refunds, return policies, customer satisfaction adjustments, instant credit for a trade-in device you're promising to mail to them (then they do not send). There are abuse scenarios where SEA is losing money. Fridge, water filters, phones.
High level there are 3 people in the US, scenario manager, application review process, etc. is the team. Others in India.
Inquisitiveness, investigative thinking, that mindset really helps. If a category rewards program manager has seen a spike, let's track that down and see if we can identify the spike. Sometimes that is the most information you get before investigating. E.g., in other fraud roles, you may get more information like how many dollars, etc. Having the curiosity and tenaciousness to go into the data world and identify these issues, with pure curiosity.
