The successful candidate will be an experienced, results-driven, strategic partner who is innovative and adaptive. As a key member of the Executive Management Team, the Chief Financial Officer (CFO) will play a strategic role in the overall leadership of the organization and help guide the council’s direction and strategy. The CFO will drive short and long-term plans and translate the vision and corporate goals set by the council’s Board of Directors into effective operational strategies and actions. The CFO is also responsible for overseeing the council’s 403(b) plan, ensuring that the Plan’s financial records are accurately maintained and that the Plan is operated in accordance with ERISA.
The CFO:
Advises the CEO, other Chief Officers, and the council’s Board of Directors on all matters pertaining to finance policy to ensure that financial strategies, decisions, and functions effectively facilitate achievement of council goals.
In conjunction with the CEO and the other Chief Officers, supervises the preparation of the annual operating and capital budgets for presentation to the Finance Committee and Board of Directors.
Oversees all financial reporting activities, providing the CEO, management, and the council’s Board of Directors with accurate and up-to-date information on the financial activities of the council.
Provides full support to the Audit Committee, Finance Committee, and other Board Task Groups, as necessary.
Ensures that all council financial operations are carried out in compliance with local, state, federal, and not-for-profit regulations, guidelines, and laws.
Oversees the day-to-day administration and control of the accounting and treasury functions to safeguard the council’s assets and to ensure financial transactions are processed timely and accurately as well as recorded in accordance with accepted accounting standards and principles.
Works closely with the external Investment Manager and Finance Committee in the oversight and communication of the council’s investment portfolio, including managing the RFP process for investment advisors, as necessary.
Provides fiduciary oversight of the council’s benefits plans, including the 403(b) Plan. Included in this responsibility is oversight of the investment managers, third-party administrators, and fiduciaries on the 403(b) plan. Ensures the plan is administered in compliance with ERISA, Department of Labor regulations, and the plan documents.
Provides timely and accurate analysis of budgets, financial reports, and financial trends to assist the CEO and the Chief Officer team in decision making and goal execution.
Fiscally manages all physical operations, including council owned and leased properties. Ensures the acquisition and disposition of fixed assets, construction, improvements, and maintenance are managed in the most cost-effective manner.
Oversees financial and operational audits, identifies opportunities for improved efficiencies, and supervises the implementation of improvements to internal controls and operating procedures.
Manages the effective development and retention of high-performing finance staff and ensures that they are organized and deployed appropriately to achieve successful operating results.
Manages the risk of the organization in collaboration with the CEO and Chief Operating Officer. Works to secure adequate insurance coverage to minimize risk in a fiscally responsible manner.
Actively supports and promotes affirmative action plans and their commitments to diversity, equity, and inclusion throughout the organization.
Supports and assists the respective teams to achieve the Council’s fund development and membership goals.
Other duties as assigned.
Job Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, or business administration with a preference for a MBA.
A minimum of 8 years proven track record as CFO or Controller with a solid understanding of accounting principles and grants management; within nonprofit preferred.
CPA Certification preferred.
Minimum of 3 years management/supervisory experience.
Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing, to analyze facts and statistics, reach objective conclusions, to advise and evaluate.
Must be able to initiate ideas and plans, to stimulate others to action, to organize and carry out a multifaceted workload, to recognize, appreciate, and serve the needs of diverse communities, to be flexible and willing to try ideas and ways of work.
Must maintain an active membership.
