The Coder III reviews Inpatient records and accurately assigns appropriate ICD-10-CM/PCS codes according to established guidelines with a 97% accuracy rate, while maintaining coding standards for productivity. Special Demands: High degree of accuracy. He/She must preserve confidentiality of health information. He/She must be able to use tact and diplomacy when communicating with employees, physicians, administration, and public, under complex or emotional situations.
The person in this position works under general supervision, is responsible for various shifts, may be subject to over 40 hours per week and/or callback as required, and may also be required to remain on campus immediately before, during, and after severe weather and/or disasters.
Qualifications:- Graduation from accredited Coding program required, or seven (7) years hospital coding experience in lieu of Graduation from accredited Coding program
- Minimum of two years coding in a hospital setting with experience in Inpatient/MS-DRG coding. Must have experience in regulatory issues related to Medicare and other third party payers as is relates to hospital coding and billing
- RHIA, RHIT, CCS, CCA, or CPC required, or Seven (7) years hospital coding experience in lieu of Certification or Credential listed above.
- Knowledge of Official Guidelines for Coding and Reporting. High level of competence in coding ICD-10-CM/PCS with a high degree of accuracy.
- Knowledge of MS-DRGs and reimbursement methods for Medicare, CHAMPUS, Medicaid, other payers. Familiar with charge master and use of CDM for reference.
- Knowledge of medical terminology, anatomy, physiology, and pharmacology.
- Knowledge and support of the Hospital’s corporate compliance initiatives and communicate any suspected coding inaccuracies in a timely manner to the Coding Manager, HIM Services Director, Compliance Officer or BHC’s Revenue Integrity Department.
- Clinical knowledge gained through education or experience. Computer keyboarding skills and basic computer knowledge including MS Word.
- Ability to maintain confidentiality of patient information in accordance with HIPAA guidelines.
- Ability to investigate patient accounts for accuracy and completeness. Ability to demonstrate a high level of problem solving skills. Ability to work effectively with co-workers, management and physicians.
- Requires strong verbal skills in interpersonal situations
