Position Purpose:
- The Computerized Tomography (CT) Technologist operates the CT scanner to perform procedures of designated body parts according to physician specifications and/or orders.
- Assists physicians in carrying out examinations by mixing and preparing contrast media and assisting in sterile procedures.
Essential Functions:
- Performs CTs, positions patient in order to obtain desired CT procedure results. Instructs patients in the proper position for required procedures. Calculates and selects proper technical factors for procedures.
- Assists physicians in performance of examinations by administering contrast media, positioning patients, assisting in sterile and other procedures. Assists physicians with scrubbing. Documents administration of IV contrast material in Picture Archiving and Communication Systems (PACS).
- Prepare patients according to established CT procedures. Transport patients between waiting, Emergency Department and CT rooms, ensuring proper identification of patients. Assists patient with dressing and undressing, if needed. Assists patients onto and off the procedure table.
- Interviews patient and/or family to obtain brief patient history to determine current health status, identify clinical indications for procedures, ensure patient safety, and identify possible complications. Completes required documentation for each patient.
- Verifies physician orders for instructions from a requesting physician and consults with the radiologists as necessary. Consults with physicians, nurses and/or other healthcare professionals are needed to obtain the highest quality images/diagnostic information.
- Explains procedure and provides education as appropriate. Communicates reactions, complications, changes in condition etc. to radiologist, physician, supervisor, peers and nursing unit as necessary.
- Appropriately and accurately transmits and archives data, images, and documentation.
- Ensures files and records are properly completed with information such as patient’s name, ID number, anatomical views taken, exam date, film/image markers, clinical history, complaints, allergies, etc. Prepares files for processing for the radiologist and collects statistics as directed.
- Review images and procedures to determine quality and perform repeated views/series as necessary.
- Provides clinical direction in CT scanning methods, techniques and procedures to train additional staff members. Participate in orientation, training, annual competency testing, etc. of new personnel and students as needed.
- Performs equipment warm up, calibration and safety check as needed. Operates hospital computer system. Reports to the Supervisor/Manager/Director any equipment malfunctions. Operates equipment in accordance with manufacturer guidelines for appropriate quality control. Implements corrective action plans if needed.
- Maintains inventory supply lists for their particular area and places orders using the on-line purchasing system. Ensures adequate supplies are kept for all aspects of clinical care, including the stockings of rooms. Maintains the work area in a clean and orderly condition and ensures the same is properly supplied for diagnostic procedures. Ensures sterile packaged supplies are not damaged or outdated.
- Cross-trains to other appropriate positions as needed.
- Acts as a steward for quality process improvement and resource management.
- Adheres to downtime procedures and to established departmental policies, procedures, and objectives.
- Performs both essential and non-essential job functions in a safe manner.
- Provides assistance to other ancillary staff as appropriate; may be required to complete basic registration and scheduling as required by the site/service.
- Adheres to guidelines set forth by the ACR.
- Will be required to perform duties within the scope of a Radiologic Technologist in the area of general radiography, as needed.
- Enhances professional growth and development and maintains current knowledge of developments, trends and techniques in CT scanning procedures/equipment through appropriate technical journals, educational programs, in-service meetings and workshops/seminars.
- Assists with the completion of all quality assurance and quality control standards for the technical component, ensuring full compliance with all accreditation agencies via accreditation process and inspections.
General Job requirements:
- Successful completion of a Radiologic technology program from an approved school
- Must be able to participate in on-call rotation
- IDNS Licensure and CPR certification required
- ARRT certification preferred
- Cross sectional anatomy
- Illinois License in Radiology IEMA
