Job Summary:
Cemetery Technicians are responsible for maintaining the grounds, performing duties associated with individual burials, providing direct assistance to customers including families, vendors, and funeral homes. Technicians assist with property sales and services, service preparation, setting memorials, and after-care of the service area including turf maintenance and automated sprinkler system maintenance, and records management, and office coverage.
Experience, Knowledge, Skills & Education:
- High school diploma or equivalent;
- 2 years' grounds maintenance, irrigation repair and/or concrete flat work experience and/or a combination or experience and education;
- Specialized training beyond normally gained in a program of less than 18 months duration desired;
- Excellent customer service skills;
- Possess a valid Colorado driver's license and a good driving record;
- Knowledge in the use of operating hand and power tools;
- English/Spanish bilingual skills desired;
- Ability to follow detailed instructions, practices, procedures in a safe and efficient manner;
- Ability to safely and efficiently operate midsize equipment in hazardous environment;
- Ability to operate mid-size excavation equipment as well as all grounds maintenance equipment (e.g., backhoe, dump truck, commercial mowers, etc.);
- Basic computer skills;
- Decision-making ability to determine the most appropriate procedure or precedent to follow to achieve desired results.
Essential Functions:
- Prepare for interment including layout, excavation, and set-up, excavation and compaction, turf care, and memorial foundation installation;
- Provide turf care including watering program, fertilization program, mowing schedule and fill program, weed abatement, irrigation, and addressing continual settling of graves and turf troubleshooting;
- Assist in pre-need and at-need sales of property and opening and closing services, taking of complaints and providing office support;
- Work during special functions including Memorial Day, Wreaths Across America, Volunteer weekend projects, and History tours;
- Provide maintenance records including mechanical preventive maintenance and repair, parts and usage and replacement, grounds fertilization program, and fuel records and inventory;
- Maintain and repair automated irrigation system;
- Provide upkeep of buildings, roads, other grounds maintenance i.e. fence repair, signs, cold storage/fill medium area, snow removal, and tree care;
- Provide customer service working with industry partners concerning foundation orders, burial vaults, and services; consulting with family members concerning maintenance requests and concerns; and following through with game plans;
- Provide direction to staff; this position works in concert with a steady stream of community service volunteers as well as seasonal labor.
Work Environment and Physical Requirements:
- Exposure to trench work and heavy equipment on a daily bases;
- Exposure to adverse weather conditions;
- Exposure to various types of machinery noise - some levels are excessive;
- Exposure to hazardous chemicals;
- Employee is subject to driving City vehicle in all weather conditions;
- Employee may be asked to drive personal vehicle for business purposes;
- Employee is subject to working alone, with groups, and/or attends meetings;
- Employee may be required to conduct business in alternate locations within City buildings or field sites, sometimes in formal settings;
- Employee may be required to work extended hours in the evening, holidays, or weekends;
- Employee may have frequent interruptions and be required to manage competing priorities with inflexible deadlines;
- Employee may have frequent contact with the public--in person, via email/telephone, sometimes facing adverse or confrontational situations with internal/external customers;
- Environment is dangerous to having considerable hazards that reflect a frequent exposure to conditions that are unpredictable and may lead to injury; Cemetery Techs are continually exposed to heavy equipment on a daily bases;
- Communication skills to interface with other departments and the public verbally and in writing;
- Vision enough to perform functions such as identifying materials necessary to complete maintenance on equipment and grounds and to operate vehicles and equipment;
- While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to walk; use hands to finger, handle, or feel; and reach with hands and arms in the operation of tools, vehicles and equipment;
- Flexibility enough to bend, twist and reach as to load and unload equipment, supplies or tools;
- Ability to move over rough, uneven and rocky surfaces in performance of grounds maintenance;
- The employee frequently is required to stand; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl; and talk or hear. The employee is occasionally required to sit, climb or balance, and taste or smell;
- The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 10 pounds, frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds, and occasionally lift and/or move up to 100 pounds; strenuous to extreme physical effort is required that includes frequent use of heavy objects (e.g., 50+ pounds) and may also use heavy tools or requires strenuous application in awkward positions; Cemetery Techs are required to act as pallbearers carrying "75# plus," running a jack hammer, hand digging in compacted, hard soil, moving granite memorials, and working with concrete bags "90# plus;"
- Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.
