About the Job
Responsibilities:
- The classroom teacher is responsible for providing a developmental and instructional program for assigned students. The Teacher will focus on development and implementation of student IEP’s, planning and implementation of daily instructional activities, monitoring student progress and providing consultation to staff, paraprofessionals, agencies, parents, and administrators.
- Provides and coordinates an appropriate, positive learning environment with a variety of activities and materials for student intervention and instruction.
- Prepares and implements daily lesson plans and instructional schedules for assigned students
- Develops and implements each student’s IEP, monitors student progress toward IEP goals/objectives, and periodically reports on this progress.
- Establishes a classroom management plan that includes positive behavior supports.
- Completes training and implements strategies in non-violent crisis intervention and works with the behavior team to address potential student behaviors.
- Conducts regular communication between home and school and provides periodic home contacts with parents.
- Provides information, resources and support to families and building staff regarding student needs.
- Establishes and maintains positive working relationships with parents, support service staff, teachers, administrators, agency personnel, classroom paraprofessionals and transportation personnel to support student needs, issues, programming, services, school activities and transitions.
- Completes and maintains student attendance, documentation and record keeping in accordance with district policies and procedures.
Qualifications:
- Valid Michigan teaching certificate with special education endorsement in the area of Cognitive Impairments or Autism Spectrum Disorders.
- Demonstrated knowledge and experience in programming for students with special needs.
- Demonstrated knowledge and application of curriculum and interventions to utilize with students with special needs.
- Ability to assess and accurately document student’s behavioral and instructional progress.
- Ability to support, communicate with and engage families as teaching partners.
