Certified Medical Assistant Job Summary:
Works under the direction of Licensed Healthcare Professionals. Schedules appointments, maintains medical records information for insurance purposes. Takes and records vital signs prepares patients for examination, draws blood, and administers medications. Enters medical, social histories and performs intakes and discharges on all patients to assist Healthcare Providers.
Certified Medical Assistant Responsibilities:
- Assists Licensed Healthcare Professionals during patient exams as needed.
- Ensures patient data is obtained accurately and documented.
- Ensure patients are provided with verbal and written information related to any type of education or orders the Licensed Healthcare Professional has given to the patient. Communicates to patients any type of instructions related to prescribed medication (i.e. where and how prescription can be picked up).
- Ensures exam and triage rooms are neat and clean. Ensures adequate and appropriate medical supplies are always available and accessible and medical supplies are not expired.
- Utilizes EMR properly, obtains and records accurately ail information for all patients. Handles medical records with confidentiality following proper protocol.
- Ensures medical equipment is utilized appropriately and maintained cleaned per manufacture guidelines. Communicates to supervisor of any malfunctions that need to be taken care.
- Administers immunizations utilizing proper technics. Ensures consent forms are signed by patient and all Vaccine Information Statements (VIS) have been given for each vaccine. Records accurately all immunizations in patient electronic medical record and Texas Immunization Registry database and if necessary patient vaccine card. Reports any adverse reaction to Licensed Healthcare Professional immediately.
- Administers injections utilizing proper technics. Reports any adverse reaction to Licensed Healthcare Professional immediately.
- Administers Oxygen and nebulizer treatments as order by Licensed Healthcare Professional.
- Performs blood draws, performs and handies specimen collection for various purposes and as instructed by policies and procedures by the department.
- Performs THSteps visit follows appropriate protocol and ships blood specimens appropriately.
- Performs CLIA waived instruments tests (glucometer, rapid flu test A & B, rapid strep test, urine HCG, urine dipstick) under the direction of a Licensed Healthcare Professional. Performs quality assurance controls on all CLIA waivered equipment and reagents as required by policy.
- Performs EKGs, hearing and vision screening, pulmonary function testing and DOT Physicals if necessary.
- Stocks sample medications, handles prescriptions and ensures patient medication history is accurate. Ensures administration of medication to patient at Clinic is recorded accurately for inventory.
- Schedules follow-up appointments, or appointments regarding results
- Conducts Patient Call Backs.
- Assists with the accurate completion of ABN's or LMRP as requested.
- Maintains referral tracking system as requested.
- Provides care and/or service appropriate for the age of all patients served.
- Projects warmth, concem and caring consistent with psychosocial and age related needs to the patient and seeks direction from license staff. Greets all patients in a friendly and caring manner.
- Facilitates patient establishment of self-management goals, participates on daily huddles and facilitates population management throughout patients.
- Promotes customer service in the performance of position duties and responsibilities and in interactions with patients, hospital staff and visitors.
- Adheres to CARES Values, standards, policies and procedures at both the Hospital and Department levels.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Certified Medical Assistant Knowledge & Experience:
- One year of Medical Assistant experience preferred.
- License/Registration/Certification: Certified Medical Assistant Certificate required. CPR training required.
- High school diploma or equivalent required.
- Completion of a Medical Assistant course required.
- Knowledge of ICDIO, CPT4 and HCPCS coding related to clinic procedures and physician billing.
- Highly effective communication skills.
- CRT proficiency and ability to type.
- Knows vaccine requirements for patients, newbons through adulthood for assigned areas.
- Knowledge in patient flow process, applicable per Clinic.
- Bilingual English/Spanish preferred
- Knowledge of THS/ CHIP.
- Ability to document EMR
