Animal Emergency and Specialty Center of Knoxville is a leading provider of emergency and specialty veterinary care. Our dedicated team delivers comprehensive and compassionate care to pets in critical conditions. We are seeking a skilled Certified Veterinary Technician to join our Intensive Care Unit (ICU) and Oncology departments, where you will play a crucial role in providing high-quality care to critically ill and oncology patients.
As a Certified Veterinary Technician working directly with our ICU and Oncology departments, you will be responsible for delivering advanced medical care, assisting with complex procedures, and supporting the ongoing treatment and management of critically ill and oncology patients. This role requires a highly skilled and compassionate individual who excels in both technical proficiency and client communication. You will collaborate closely with veterinarians and other team members to ensure the best possible outcomes for our patients.

Key Responsibilities
ICU Patient Care:
- Provide continuous monitoring and care for critically ill patients in the ICU, including managing vital signs, administering medications, and performing necessary treatments. Implement and monitor advanced life-support techniques, including oxygen therapy, fluid resuscitation, and pain management.
- Assist with emergency procedures and interventions, including intubation, CPR, and emergency diagnostics.
Oncology Patient Care:
- Assist in the preparation and administration of chemotherapy treatments and other oncology-related therapies.
- Monitor patients for adverse reactions to treatments and manage side effects, including administering supportive care such as anti-nausea medications and pain management. Support the diagnostic process by performing and assisting with procedures such as biopsies, imaging, and laboratory tests.
Technical Skills and Procedures:
- Perform and interpret diagnostic tests, including blood work, urinalysis, and radiographs, to aid in the diagnosis and treatment of critical and oncology patients.
- Operate and maintain specialized ICU and oncology equipment, ensuring proper calibration and function.
- Assist veterinarians with advanced diagnostic procedures and treatments, including endoscopy and ultrasound.
Client Communication and Education:
- Provide clear and compassionate communication to clients regarding their pets' conditions, treatment plans, and progress.
- Educate clients on at-home care requirements, medication administration, and follow-up procedures, ensuring they have the information needed to support their pets’ recovery. Address client concerns and questions with empathy, offering support and guidance throughout the treatment process.
Operational Duties:
- Maintain accurate and detailed medical records for ICU and oncology patients, documenting all treatments, observations, and interactions.
- Ensure a clean and organized work environment, adhering to infection control protocols and maintaining the integrity of medical equipment.
- Assist with inventory management, including ordering and stocking necessary supplies and medications for ICU and oncology care.
Team Collaboration:
- Collaborate effectively with veterinarians, specialists, and other veterinary technicians to ensure comprehensive patient care.
- Participate in team meetings and case discussions, contributing insights and observations to enhance patient treatment plans.
- Support the training and mentoring of new or less experienced staff members within the ICU and oncology departments.
Skills, Knowledge & Expertise to be Successful
Qualifications/Experience:
- Minimum of 3 years of experience as a veterinary technician, with significant experience in an ICU and/or oncology setting preferred.
- Demonstrated proficiency in advanced veterinary techniques and emergency care
Skills and Competencies:
- Advanced technical skills in ICU and oncology care, including the ability to handle complex medical equipment and procedures.
- Excellent communication skills, with the ability to convey complex information to clients clearly and empathetically.
- Strong organizational skills and attention to detail, with the ability to manage multiple tasks and priorities effectively.
Education and Certification:
- Associate’s Degree or higher in Veterinary Technology from an accredited institution.
- Valid Veterinary Technician license (LVT/RVT/CVT) in the state of Tennessee required.
- Certification or specialized training in emergency or oncology care is highly desirable.
