Job Summary:
The Chief Engineer has overall responsibility for the plant equipment, facility power/utility systems (electrical, steam, water/plumbing, etc) as well as the buildings & grounds of the operations. The Chief Engineer works closely with Production Managers and other Staff Managers to ensure smooth day-to-day operations as it relates to maintenance needs. This position requires a natural leadership style and innate ability to delegate work, oversee completion and hold subordinates accountable for desired results.

Essential Functions:
-Maintains all plant equipment and facility systems in optimal condition.
-Supervises the plant engineering teams and conducts weekly meetings to ensure project completion.
-Manages spare parts & supplies inventories in a cost-effective manner.
-Executes an effective PM program to minimize unscheduled equipment downtime.
-Conduct regular tests/checks of water hardness, tank temps, boiler pressure and reclaim system operation in boiler rooms.
-Troubleshoots any/all complex issues related to plant operations (electrical, steam, plumbing, electronic, etc).
-Understands PLC’s + ladder logic
-Communicate regularly with Maintenance Leads & Techs regarding work they should be doing and projects they are assigned. Ensure effective completion of all delegated tasks.
-Lead a team of Teamsters Union Maintenance techs at 2 separate facilities, and operate within the framework of the Collective Bargaining Agreement.
-Oversees all purchasing of equipment, parts and supplies needed for operations. Understands budgets and P&L limitations as they apply to costs and spending each month.
-Hires, trains, develops and manages a department of qualified technicians required to repair & maintain all equipment & facilities in safe and efficient condition.
-Oversee the PM program High/Low Frequency items and ensure required completion by every tech every month. Logs, posts and submits reporting to G.O. as requested.
-Conduct weekly Spot Job Observations (SJO) with Production Managers and maintenance techs to evaluate PM work performed and ensure proper completion as expected.
-Work with all plant personnel and front-line operators in a cooperative and professional manner.
-Strictly adhere to all safety rules, policies and procedures required by Alsco, law, and what is recognized as common practice in the industry.
-Participates in all Safety Committee & Sub-Committee Meetings as scheduled. Offers input, guidance and assistance in safety areas as requested or required by position.
-Understands blueprints and manufacturer manuals to determine correct operation of machinery.
-Proficient in reading electrical schematics.
-Develop and train maintenance techs to keep them current on equipment & repair procedures.
-Keep accurate and timely records of maintenance performed, in addition to PM program.
-Follow Alsco Inc directives, SOP’s and procedures as they relate to maintenance, production and environmental compliance.
-Thorough understanding of OSHA rules, EPA guidelines and local/state/federal laws & regulations as they apply to commercial laundry operations.
- Works closely with the City of Denver and third party testing contractors to ensure Wastewater testing compliance.
Additional Functions:
- Partner with Corporate Engineering to plan/budget for large capital expenditure projects.
- Spearhead project management in both plants; i.e. new equipment installation, building renovations/remodel, parking lot/fence/landscaping; plant lighting/painting/beautification; 5S compliance; HVAC-ventilation, cooling; etc.
- Drive to pick up supplies, transport equipment, parts, etc.
Qualifications:
-Have & maintain a valid driver’s license and driving record free of chargeable accidents, speeding or other safety violations.
-Minimum of five years maintenance engineering experience with specific knowledge of machinery, electricity, electronics, plumbing, hydraulics, pneumatics, welder and boiler applications.
-Strong electrical troubleshooting ability of 3-phase 230 volt systems.
-PLC programming knowledge/experience.
-Experience in carpentry, steam-plant, plumbing, welding and general facility repairs.
-Must be a team player with enthusiasm, initiative, and pride in work well done; self-starter with strong Attention to Detail and focus on continuous improvement.
Education:
-High school graduate or equivalent. Bachelor’s or Associates degree preferred.
-Some locations may require relevant certifications, a boiler license or PLC programming.
Typical Physical Activity:
-Standing, sitting, walking, stooping, climbing ladders, driving a forklift, grasping, moving equipment, pushing, pulling, squeezing into tight spaces, working overhead and/or in high places, and able to safely lift up to 65 lbs.
Typical Environmental Conditions
-Inside and outside areas of a typical industrial laundry facility which includes working with & around large machinery, extreme variations in temperature, noise, odors, humidity; low-light, wet surfaces, lint and dust, etc.
Travel Requirements
-Regularly between Cook & Elm processing facilities to oversee daily work and projects.
-Occasionally to procure parts & supplies as needed.
-Possibly to training meetings, workshops or seminars as requested.
