SUMMARY
The Chief Engineer is directly responsible for supervising the engineering and grounds teams to maintain the condition of the properties at optimal levels. This includes executing ongoing and preventative maintenance programs, monitoring expenses, inventorying parts and supplies and ensuring projects are completed in accordance with La Jolla Beach & Tennis Club, Inc. guidelines. Promotes and follows LJBTC, Inc.'s Signature Service standards and requirements ensuring a lasting impression of exemplary service resulting in supremely satisfied and loyal members and guests.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Responsible for staffing and maintenance of all engineering and grounds positions.
- Ensures neatness and cleanliness of the engineering shop and all engineering storage and areas of responsibility.
- Supervises directly all engineering and grounds personnel.
- Selects, hires and trains employees in this department.
- Determines supplies to be purchased, sets and monitors inventories.
- Prepares reports, budgets and correspondence.
- Prepares monthly financial critiques along with monthly 90 day rolling forecast.
- Ensures quality control and work standards are maintained and regularly updated to meet changing department and property needs.
- Ensures that compliance is met with all applicable ordinances, regulations and laws (OSHA, ADA, etc.).
- Implements and monitors preventative maintenance programs (i.e. utilizing HotSOS, department systems, etc.).
- Maintains inventories of repair parts and consumable supplies to minimize downtime and maximize cash flow.
- Administers work request program in conjunction with Guest Assistance/Hotsos tracking program.
- Provides support and assistance to all departments to serve guest satisfaction, sales and profit goals.
- Establishes annual goals.
- Facilitates monthly departmental meeting.
- Other duties may be assigned.
Supervisory/Management Responsibilities:
- Confers with workers to resolve complaints regarding work.
- Coaches and counsel's department personnel as needed.
- Sets an example for subordinates by meeting and exceeding the performance requirements of the job and maintaining good work habits (punctuality, reliability).
Accident Prevention and Safety:
- Analyzes tasks for potential dangers and promptly corrects hazards or informs supervisor and/or safety committee representative.
- Follows safety rules and regulations at all times.
Energy Conservation and Energy Consumption:
- In conjunction with the preventative maintenance program, observes the building and mechanical equipment to identify ways to conserve energy. Whenever possible, attempts to reduce unnecessary energy consumption and to ensure necessary consumption is as efficient as possible.
- Assists in effectively establishing and implementing energy conservation programs. Offers technical advice and information for energy programs within each department.
Fire Protection:
- Maintains knowledge of the building fire and life safety systems and trains others in the operation of the system.
- Maintains familiarity with the La Jolla Beach and Tennis Club Emergency Organization Plan.
Financial Management:
- Maintains familiarity with GL codes, and code packing slips and material requisitions.
- Assist in preparation of annual budget.
- Monitors the purchase order and material requisition systems to ensure that effective cost control is being maintained.
Technical and Service Responsibilities:
- Responsible for the maintenance activities on utility systems to provide continuous supply of heat, electric power, gas, or air required for operations.
- Inspects operating machines and equipment for conformance with operational standards.
- Works with Landscaping Operations Supervisor in planning, developing, and implementing new methods and procedures designed to improve operations, minimize operating costs, and effect greater utilization of labor and materials.
- Responds and ensures quick response by the Engineering/Grounds Department to customer needs, which will meet or exceed customer expectations.
- Confers with management to resolve maintenance problems and recommend measures to improve operations and conditions of machines and equipment.
- Maintains skills and knowledge in the following areas: V.A.C. and Refrigeration; Boiler Plant Operation, A/C electrical and electrical troubleshooting; telephone switch; electronic door locks, arc welding, gas welding, soldering and brazing; plumbing (with steel, copper and plastic pipe; fire protection, hydraulics, pneumatics, sanitation, laundry and kitchen equipment).
OUTCOME
The overall maintenance of the guest rooms and the facilities influence guest and co-employee impression of the total organization. Clean, well maintained guest rooms, facilities and equipment will contribute to guest comfort and satisfaction, and achieve room occupancy and revenue goals.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES
Directly supervises employees in the Engineering/Grounds Department. Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization's policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; addressing complaints and resolving problems.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE
Associate's degree (A. A.) or equivalent from Two‑year College or technical school; or three to five years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
LANGUAGE SKILLS
Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence in English representing appropriate business etiquette in written form (grammar, punctuation, syntax, etc). Ability to speak effectively in English with customers, managers, vendors, or employees of organization.
MATHEMATICAL SKILLS
Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, commissions, proportions, percentages, area, circumference, and volume. Ability to apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry.
REASONING ABILITY
Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.
CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS
Must have valid California driver's license.

Employees in the position of engineering/grounds interact frequently with all the departments, tenants and guests. Employees must have the ability to communicate effectively and work with the many departments along with designated guests or vendors.
SCHEDULING
This company operates seven days a week, 24 hours a day. Shifts will generally be rotated unless you were hired for a specific shift, as much as possible to be fair to everyone. Be aware that at times it may be necessary to move you from your accustomed shift if business or task assignments demand.
