Position Overview:
Under supervision, integrates knowledge, theory and practice to properly execute procedures in assigned areas of the laboratory to deliver accurate results in a timely manner. Develops competence to perform pre-analytic, analytic and post-analytic procedures on biological specimens to aid health care providers in the diagnosis, treatment, monitoring and prevention of disease. Performs basic laboratory procedures, including phlebotomy, specimen processing, quality control, and waived, moderate or high complexity testing (as classified by the Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments - CLIA). If assigned to the transfusion service, performs moderate or high complexity testing and other duties such as blood inventory management, blood product preparation, and issuing blood products for transfusion. Adheres to all local/state/federal regulations, codes, policies and procedures to ensure patient privacy and maintain the highest level of safety and reliability in testing. Note: Assignments and scope of duties are consistent with type of license - either a CLS - Generalist or one of the limited CLS license (e.g. Clinical Chemist Scientist, Clinical Microbiologist Scientist, and Clinical Immunohematologist Scientist)

JOB ACCOUNTABILITIES:
PRE-ANALYTIC, ANALYTIC, AND POST-ANALYTIC WORK.
• learns to perform procedures to complete test order entry, specimen collection and specimen processing/handling.
• When assigned to transfusion services, learns pre-analytic and blood product management tasks.
Under direct supervision of a CLS.
• Learns to perform analyses of biological specimens using automated and manual test methods of waived moderate or high complexity (per CLIA definition), producing test results necessary for the diagnosis, treatment, monitoring and prevention of disease.
• Learns to perform post-analytic procedures, including interpretation, releasing, reporting results;
amending/correcting results, responding to inquiries, and specimen storage and retrieval. Recognizes when patient results require additional action prior to reporting (e.g. delta checks and critical values), taking action appropriately.
EQUIPMENT.
• Learns to calibrate and adjust laboratory equipment according to requirements and manufacturer’s guidelines, including providing regular preventive maintenance (where automated methods are used) of analytical equipment and performing minor adjustments and repairs.
QUALITY ASSURANCE (QA).
• Scope of learned QA duties and tasks includes maintaining a safe and orderly work area, inventory management, quality control, proficiency testing, record keeping, privacy, security and confidentiality, and continual process improvement.
• Recognizes when test systems are not functioning within control, taking action appropriately.

• Develops up-to-date operational information and job knowledge; effectively applies information, job knowledge and critical thinking to make sound decisions and solve problems within scope of job responsibilities; escalates problems appropriately if outside of job scope. Completes learning and competency assessment activities as assigned.

EDUCATION:
Bachelor's: A baccalaureate in biological sciences or an equivalent major from an accredited college or university, completing the number of semester and/or quarter units in coursework relevant to a CLS Generalist or CLS limited license as specified by the California Code of Regulations – Title

OR Other: Equivalent military experience
CERTIFICATION & LICENSURE:
CLS Generalist Trainee License or Limited CLS Trainee License granted by CDPH Laboratory Field Services
SKILLS AND KNOWLEDGE:
Continually increasing knowledge and technical competence in routine specimen collection, preparation, testing applications, laboratory operations, and quality assurance in one or more assigned clinical specialty areas; examples: Chemistry, Special Chemistry, Hematology/Coagulation, Urinalysis and
Transfusion Service.
Quantity of Work: Ability to organize and prioritize job duties and assigned tasks for completion within expected timeframes
Proficiency:
Quality of Work: Ability to accurately, precisely, and reliably perform job duties and assigned tasks.
Demonstrates sound judgment and problem solving relevant to assigned duties.
