The Institute for Health Disparities (IHD) conducts research, training and community outreach in the areas of minority health, health disparities and workforce diversity. Constituting the IHD are the Texas Center for Health Disparities, National Research Mentoring Network, Texas CEAL Consortium, Diversity Training Programs and the NIMHD Endowment.
Position Overview
The Communications Specialist will work under the Project Management Officer of the AIMAHEAD Leadership/Administration Core within the AIMAHEAD Consortium. The Communications specialist will develop and implement strategic outreach and communications plans to increase awareness of the AIMAHEAD initiatives.
Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree and two (2) years related experience; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Proficient in Social Media platforms
- Proficient in Microsoft Office, WordPress and Adobe Suite; Working knowledge of google suite is a plus
- Strong organizational skills and attention to detail to ensure accuracy
- Strong presentation skills. Strong problem-solving skills
- Strong critical thinking skills
- Ability to communicate effectively with diverse populations verbally and in writing
- Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships

Preferred Qualifications
- BA/BS required with a minimum of 3 related experience; or equivalent combination of education and experience

Job Duties:
- Research, write, edit, and proofread stories. Provide timely updates and work collaboratively with the Communications Team.
- Coordinate website editorial content with staff, keep content up to date, and ensure all web pages and documents meet established content standards.
- Work with leadership to develop key messages and talking points and identify opportunities for positive communications.
- Develop and maintain stakeholder communications and media lists, as well as a cost-effective and integrated news distribution strategy aligned with key audiences (e.g. Al/ML academics and industry, community health workers, faith based organizations, nonprofits, etc.).
- Develop, edit, and/or write compelling content for online, social media, in person, and in print use, including client stories, fact sheets, op-eds, blog postings, PowerPoint presentations, scripts, speeches, white papers, etc.
- Monitor situations that may adversely impact AIMAHEADs reputation, and, as situations require, recommend and develop an appropriate communications response.
- Coordinate media outreach on new program launches or innovative initiatives, as necessary
- Work with Communications Team to create strategies for social media platforms and create and post content daily, keeping audiences engaged (Facebook, Twitter, and YouTube).
- Craft creative, compelling and relevant content for recruitment and consortium growth, i.e. catalogs, brochures, newsletters, postcards, etc.
- Coordinate with HSC Marketing and Communications Department to arrange and facilitate press conferences and media coverage of events, as needed. Coordinate with the HSC Marketing and Communications Department for media outreach on new program launches or innovative initiatives, as necessary. Work with Project Management Office to coordinate communications. Participate in organizing annual meetings and other coordinating center meetings
