POSITION PURPOSE
The Assistant Controller manages the day-to-day operation of the Accounting Office. Primary responsibilities include financial analysis and financial reporting, budgeting/forecasting, audit and control, asset and liability reconciliation, working capital and cash control.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
- Preparation of month end closing, including, but not limited to:
- Oversee monthly completion of cost transfers and compilation of inventories
- Prepare and post journal entries
- Review preliminary financial statements with Controller and department managers
- Conduct monthly financial reviews
- Prepare month end reports
- Reconciliation of the balance sheet
- Preparation/Review of the daily revenue report and daily labor report
- Hire, train, supervise, and evaluate the performance of the accounting staff
- Assist staff and other departments with accounting questions and issues
- Assist with annual budgeting process
- Assist with monthly revenue and labor forecasts
- Assist with special reporting and analysis projects
- Comply with PCI standards
- Perform other various tasks as needed
- Attend all monthly and required meetings
- Assist in the formulation of internal controls and policies to comply with legislation and established best practices
- Participate in the preparation of the annual audit
- Support the long-term budgetary planning and cost management in alignment with the hotels strategic/business plan, especially to improve the overall performance
Other:
Regular attendance in conformance with the standards, which may be established from time to time, is essential to the successful performance of this position. Employees with irregular attendance will be subject to disciplinary action, up to and including termination of employment.
Due to the cyclical nature of the hospitality industry, employees may be required to work varying schedules to reflect the business needs of the hotel. In addition, attendance at all scheduled training sessions and meetings is required.

Employees who violate hotel rules and regulations will be subject to disciplinary action, up to and including termination of employment.
SUPPORTIVE FUNCTIONS
In addition to performance of the essential functions, this position may be required to perform a combination of the following supportive functions, with the percentage of time performing each function to be solely determined by the manager based upon the particular requirements of the hotel:
- Participate in required department and property meetings.
- Other duties as assigned by ownership or management company.

- Must have strong financial competence, ideally within a hotel environment

- Proficient with Microsoft Office, including Word, Excel, and Outlook
- Proficient with Accounting software programs

- Must be able to accurately follow instructions, both verbally and written

Physical Demands
- Must be able to sit for long periods of time
- Must be able to perform simple grasping, fine manipulation, and repetitive hand & arm movements frequently
- Must be able to bend, squat, crawl, kneel, push, pull, walk on uneven surfaces on an occasional basis
- While primarily an indoor job, must be able to walk outside in a variety of weather conditions (rain, wind, heat)
- Must be able to climb stairs occasionally, both indoors and outside in a variety of weather conditions (rain, wind, heat)

QUALIFICATION STANDARDS
Education
- High school diploma or equivalent required
- College degree preferred
Experience
- 5 years of accounting experience required
- Minimum 1year hotel accounting experiencerequired
- Minimum 2 years customer service experience preferred
Grooming
All employees must maintain a neat, clean and well-groomed appearance per Westin/Sheraton Carlsbad’s standards.
