What You Will Do
The Solid Mechanics team, within T-3 group of the Theoretical Division, is seeking a highly motivated and productive graduate student to accomplish advancements in theoretical and computational modeling, with a focus on modeling porous media under dynamic compaction. Of interest is the research performing direct numerical simulations of porous materials under dynamic compaction at mesoscale and assessing the ability of the continuum models at macroscale to reproduce the results at mesoscale. The successful candidate will engage in daily communication of accomplishments with the primary mentor, contribute know-how in technical discussions, fulfill technical goals.

Education/Experience: Completion of a bachelor's degree and acceptance into a graduate degree program. Cumulative GPA of at least 3.2 is required.

What You Need

- Complete a minimum of 6 credit hours (or equivalent) of course work the quarter before hire and enroll in and complete at least 6 credit hours per quarter while working as a graduate intern.
- Maintain a graduate cumulative GPA of at least 3.2 over the course of the program.
- Ability to pass a pre-employment drug test and uphold a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing.
- Ability to formulate and implement innovative approaches and solutions to problems.
- Strong communication skills for a wide range of audiences.
Education/Experience: Completion of a bachelor's degree and acceptance into a graduate degree program. Cumulative GPA of at least 3.2 is required.
Desired Qualifications:
- Familiar with executing large simulations on a high-performance computing cluster, Slurm workload manager, bash scripts.
- Coursework in continuum mechanics, advanced numerical method, tensor calculus, and experience in computational solid mechanics.
- Familiarity with programming languages: Fortran, Python.
- Strong computer skills including experience with database management.
