About This Opportunity
As the Estimator at Rockford Construction in the Grand Rapids, MI office, you will create estimates for pre-construction services, calculating costs for various projects while working closely with RC estimators, project managers, clients and subcontractors. The ideal candidate will be comfortable collecting, analyzing data and forecasting. You must have great attention to detail and have excellent communication and negotiating skills. This role focuses on design/build and plan/spec work. The position reports directly to the Director of Preconstruction.

Key Responsibilities
- Create conceptual, schematic design, design development, and construction document, budgets and estimate.
- Assist in creating bid scopes for bidding.
- Perform quantity takeoff estimates for all trades involved in the specific project.
- Assemble preliminary schedules as required.
- Create and maintain cost history database and library of unit costs.
- Assist in establishing outline specifications, construction, architectural, and schedule for owner contracts.
- Assembly/review hand-off package for awarded projects.
- Value engineering concepts as required for projects.
- Assemble preliminary schedules as required.
- Support Project Managers as principal in key meetings.
- 40% travel beyond the daily commute to the main office in Grand Rapids, MI.
- Other duties as assigned.
Requirements
Education Requirements:
- A Bachelor’s degree in Construction Management or similar.
Competency Requirements:
- 4 or more years of experience in an estimating role with a background estimating; commercial, mixed use, restaurant, hotel and education projects.
- Knowledge and understanding of commercial construction ranging in costs from $100,000 to 100 million dollars.
- Experience utilizing estimating software, such as On-Screen Takeoff, Microsoft Project, Microsoft Office Suite and Bluebeam.
- The ability to read and understand blueprints.
- Outstanding oral and written communication and negotiation skills.
- Must be able to work well independently and in a team atmosphere.
- Travel will be required to visit jobsites; reliable transportation required.
Bonus Skills and Experience:
- CSI certification and membership with ASPE, highly desirable.
- Experience with multi-unit and/or hospitality construction, highly desirable.
- Previous field operations experience (carpenter, foreman, subcontractor) is valuable.

Environmental Factors
The work environment for this position may subject the individual to hazards commonly associated with construction sites. Examples of physical hazards include noise, proximity to moving vehicles, atmospheric conditions, close quarters, uneven surfaces, and elevated surfaces. The individual may also be subjected to outside environmental conditions (weather) where protection may not be available. Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) is required at all times outside the job trailer. The work environment for this position may also include occasional visits to the corporate office and job site trailer, the physical demands require the ability to sit for long periods of time.
