Reporting to the Vice President, the Director of Tax is responsible for managing tax reporting and compliance within the Hackensack Meridian Health Network (the 'Network'). Ensures tax returns are complete, accurate and filed timely to minimize tax obligations. Responsible for tax planning in preparation for future filings.
Responsibilities:A day in the life of a Director of Tax at Hackensack Meridian Health includes:
- Preparing and timely filing annual Form 990 'Return of Organization Exempt from Tax' Return(s) for Non-Profit entities (including extensions) and prepare/review presentation(s) for Audit & Compliance Committee/Board of Trustees for all Network entities. Ensure information is in compliance with IRS regulations and the Hospitals capture the actual value of the cost provided to the community.
- Preparing and timely filing annual for-profit and partnership returns (including extensions) Form 1120 Corporate Income Tax return, Form 1065 Partnership returns for the relevant Network entities.
- Preparing and timely filing annual State returns and extensions for for-profit and not-for-profit entities of the Network including but not limited to: CBT-100, CRI-200/300, , NJ-1065, etc.
- Preparing and timely filing quarterly/annual reporting requirements for the Network's Foreign entities including but not limited to: Form 720, Form 926, Form 5471, FinCen 114, and to the U.S. Department of Commerce's Bureau of Economic Affairs and CRS (Common Reporting Standards).
- Post-issuance compliance for the Network's tax-exempt bonds including but not limited to tracking and monitoring private use.
- Annual filing of the Network's property tax reports to Tax Assessors including but not limited to: Initial Statements, Further Statements and Annual Statement of Income and Expenses.
- Managing all Federal, State and Local governmental inquiries and audits.
- Participates in tax planning initiatives for the Network.
- Acts as the lead for all internal and external audit inquiries for tax-related matters for the Network.
- Keeps abreast of changes in tax statutes and regulations and determines impact on Network's operations.
- Ensuring that appropriate internal controls are in place over accounting for income taxes.
- Work with the payroll department to ensure appropriate handling of payroll tax deductions, including Federal & State withholding, FICA withholding for employees including those related to pension/SERP, post-retirement plan distributions to employees.
- Manage, develop, and mentor staff/managers on projects and assess performance through formal periodic reviews and informal feedback.
- Oversees outside consultants/advisors for tax planning/review services.
- Other duties and/or projects as assigned.

Education, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required:
- Bachelor's degree in Business, Finance, Accounting or related field with CPA certification defined below; Or if no CPA certification - must have a Master's of Business Administration (MBA), Master's in Taxation (MS), or Juris Doctorate (JD).
- Minimum of 7 or more years of experience in tax.
- Minimum of 5 years of demonstrated experience leading a Finance/Tax team.
- Knowledge of Internal Revenue Code and various State Tax Codes.
- Knowledge of spreadsheet programs (i.e., Excel, etc.).
- Knowledge of generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP).
- Demonstrates initiative and sense of urgency.
- Disciplined approach to strategic initiatives, business projects and day-to-day activities.
- Ability to analyze and comprehend complex information.
- Ability to convey complex materials to senior executives as well as all levels of the organization.
- Comfortable dealing with both complexity and ambiguity, with ability to explore multiple solutions to a problem.
- Strong analytical, critical thinking and problem solving skills.
- High degree of financial acumen (finance and economics).
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills (written, verbal, presentation).
Education, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Preferred:
- Oracle PeopleSoft systems.
- Working in Google Workspace.
Licenses and Certifications Required:
- Certified Public Accountant (CPA) certification with the Bachelor's degree defined above; Or if no CPA certification - must have a Master's of Business Administration (MBA), Master's in Taxation (MS), or Juris Doctorate (JD).
