Position Overview:
The Director of Accounting plays a fundamental role in maintaining the accuracy, integrity, and timeliness of the organization’s financial reporting. Utilizing the Museum’s financial and ticketing systems, they will prepare and record transactions to the Museum’s general ledger, prepare balance sheet reconciliations, and be critical to the close process. Specifically managing the Museum’s general ledger accounting processes, accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll and financial reporting functions. Reporting to the Vice President of Finance and Business Analytics, the Director of Accounting will ensure compliance with nonprofit accounting standards, drive efficient financial processes, and support strategic decision-making within the organization. The ideal candidate will have extensive experience in nonprofit accounting, strong leadership abilities, and a passion for supporting the Museum's mission.

Major Tasks and Responsibilities:
- Oversee daily accounting operations, including accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll, general ledger, and fixed asset accounting.
- Lead and develop an accounting team of three, fostering collaboration and high performance.
- Prepare and manage financial statements, ensuring adherence to GAAP and nonprofit reporting standards.
- Review and approve journal entries and account reconciliations prepared by the Accounting Manager and Staff Accountant to ensure the accuracy of financial records.
- Develop and maintain effective internal controls to safeguard assets and ensure the accuracy of financial data.
- Assist with financial analysis to support decision-making and budgeting, including historical and forecasted trend analysis.
- Oversee bi-weekly payroll processes, including salaried and hourly employees, and act as a backup for payroll processing in iSolved People Cloud.
- Serve as the System Administrator for accounting and reporting software, including Sage Intacct, BlackLine, Concur Expense, and Power BI. Familiarity with Gateway Galaxy POS and Toast POS systems is preferred.
- Assist in preparing quarterly financial reports for the Finance Committee and Board of Directors.
- Support external auditors and tax return preparers, providing necessary documentation for annual audits.
Experience / Qualifications / Requirements:
- Minimum of 7 years of accounting experience, with a focus on nonprofit organizations preferred.
- Work experience as Accounting Supervisor at company(s) with $10M in yearly revenues
- Proficiency in general ledger close processes.
- Strong knowledge of GAAP and nonprofit financial reporting.
- Technical skills in Excel and Microsoft Office Suite.
- Familiarity with accounting software (Sage Intacct, BlackLine, Concur) is preferred but not required.
- Experience with point-of-sale systems (Gateway Galaxy POS, Toast POS) is a plus.
- Ability to work independently and maintain positive relationships with colleagues and guests.

Education: Bachelor’s degree in finance, accounting, or a related field. CPA is a plus.
