The Director, Communications is a new member of the Amalgamated Charitable Foundation with a mission of honing and amplifying the Foundation’s voice as a bold leader in the philanthropic space at a pivotal time for the organization. As ACF embarks on a new chapter in its growth with ambitious goals for its public profile, the Director must bring an energetic, enterprising, strategic approach to maximizing awareness, interest, and engagement among priority audiences, as well as being able to oversee/manage crisis and rapid response communications needs.
This role will support a broad range of communications, branding, and creative content initiatives across the organization, including leading a rebranding campaign and refreshing core messaging. The Director will:
The Director will also be responsible for supporting a variety of internal communications initiatives in partnership with People and Culture, Executive, and Leadership Teams to ensure staff communications are on-brand and aligned with external efforts.
Strong candidates will be self-driven, collaborative, and possess a sophisticated understanding of philanthropy and social justice, with a strong creative point of view.

The salary for this position is $150,000 - $175,000 commensurate with experience. This position will be remotely based. The role will require domestic travel, as needed, including the Foundation’s retreats and other in-person meetings as necessary. This role will support a broad range of communications, branding, and creative content initiatives across the organization, including leading a rebranding campaign and refreshing core messaging. The Director will:
- Lead the development and execution of multiple communications and marketing campaigns across various digital, media, and interpersonal channels, and approaches;
- Elevate the Foundation's leadership voices via a comprehensive executive positioning strategy including speaker participation in high-visibility events, placement of opinion editorials, and social; and
- Build the organization’s communications capacity via infrastructure development and vendor/consultant management.
The Director will also be responsible for supporting a variety of internal communications initiatives in partnership with People and Culture, Executive, and Leadership Teams to ensure staff communications are on-brand and aligned with external efforts.

Responsibilities
Strategic Communications
- Develop, implement, and execute a strategic and innovative communication plan, including setting priorities and goals, measurable objectives, strategies, and tactics.
- Develop and implement the Foundation’s core messaging in conjunction with the Leadership team and communications consultants.
- Ensure consistency in narrative and messaging across strategic communications channels and tactics.
- Provide strategic advice and counsel on all external and internal strategic communications, branding, and messaging issues, including rapid response and proactive crisis communications.
- Manage and maintain an up-to-date crisis communications plan and review with relevant stakeholders on a regular basis.
- Act as spokesperson for the Foundation in response to media inquiries and other media opportunities.
- Develop talking points, media interview prep, and presentations for senior leadership as necessary.
- Lead earned media efforts, including proactive and responsive outreach to relevant reporters and outlets.
- Lead marketing strategy, including oversight of new materials or collateral for a wide variety of in-person and virtual public and programmatic events.
- Communicate and collaborate effectively with internal and external stakeholders and all levels of staff, including Directors, to provide information and consult and seek input on strategic communications and campaigns.
- Establish and manage effective cross-team relationships with organization leadership, program leads, development, and others to identify communications goals, target audiences, and timely, strategic opportunities that advance collective priorities.
- Supervise and manage communications staff and consultants.
Digital Communications
- Maintain robust knowledge of digital media marketing and evaluate emerging technologies and their use, while managing the assessment and rollout of new communications tools.
- Oversee updates to and maintenance of ACF’s website, including all primary content updates and structural changes, incorporating best practices for Web design and marketing.
- Develop, implement, and maintain processes for timely reports analyzing/sharing key performance indicators of digital marketing efforts including performance reports.
- Oversee the Foundation’s paid and email marketing program, devising schedules, timelines, list segmentation, and content for a wide variety of targeted outreach.
- Develop and implement effective and timely brand and positioning strategies designed to drive awareness, engagement, and understanding of the brand, while highlighting ACF’s unique role in philanthropy, including ACF’s unique relationship with Amalgamated Bank.
- Act as project lead for assigned brand initiatives and design projects, maintaining brand standards across a variety of mediums in conjunction with Leadership team.
- Oversee development of content planning, including verticals across earned media, editorial, publications, organizational narrative/messaging, and more.
- Oversee graphic design strategy and content, ensuring all materials are on brand and reflect organizational messaging.
- Oversee the production of high-quality materials, including decks, brochures, web pages, and other collaterals designed to drive awareness and engagement.
- Oversee and provide guidance and training as needed to staff on effective brand usage and guidelines.
- Manage all external design and Web vendors and work with department to select appropriate external support for projects as needed.
- A minimum of 9 years of communications, political and/or advocacy campaigns, marketing, and/or public relations experience is required, with a preference for nonprofit or foundation-related experience.
- A minimum of 3 years of experience in crisis and rapid response communications.
- Deep dedication to the mission of values of the Foundation.
- Strong team player with a positive attitude and willingness to work collaboratively with both internal and external stakeholders.
- Proven record in identifying and achieving measurable strategic communications goals, strategies, and tactics.
- Strong knowledge of values-based framing and working with diverse audiences.
- Action-oriented problem solver willing to roll up your sleeves and overcome challenges and roadblocks.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills and effective interpersonal skills.
- Familiarity with maintaining an organization’s narrative and message structure.
- Experienced writer and editor well-versed in quickly synthesizing, distilling, and translating large quantities of complex policy and/or issue-related information into easily understandable communications.
- Ability to create compelling written messages and craft human impact stories that inspire action.
- Keen creative professional with an eye for design and familiarity with design principles and best practices.
- Project Management: tracking, driving, reporting, engaging the necessary stakeholders, tools, resources, and information to produce desired results; ability to move nimbly among a variety of projects with varying timelines in alignment with values, mission, and strategic goals.
- Effective people manager with the ability to mentor staff and provide inclusive leadership.
- Keen eye for detail and accuracy.
- Strong technological skills with ability to navigate and easily and/or independently learn new systems as needed.
- Desire to be a part of a growing organization with the flexibility to lean into opportunities.
- Ability to work joyfully in a start-up environment.
