Job Responsibilities
- Oversee the daily operations of the emergency department, ensuring efficient patient flow and high-quality care.
- Provide clinical leadership and direction to nursing staff, fostering a collaborative and supportive environment.
- Ensure compliance with all hospital policies, procedures, and standards of care, as well as state and federal regulations.
- Develop and implement nursing protocols and procedures in collaboration with the emergency department staff and physicians.
- Monitor patient care to ensure adherence to established standards and identify areas for improvement.
- Conduct regular staff meetings to disseminate updates, address issues, and gather feedback from the nursing team.
- Manage staff scheduling, including shift assignments, vacation, and leave requests to ensure adequate coverage at all times.
- Participate in the recruitment, hiring, and training of new nursing staff members.
- Conduct performance evaluations for nursing staff, providing feedback and identifying opportunities for professional development.
- Serve as a mentor and resource for nursing staff, offering clinical expertise and guidance.
- Coordinate with other hospital departments to optimize patient care and departmental efficiency.
- Manage the department's budget, including supplies and equipment procurement, and work to optimize resource utilization.
- Address and resolve patient and family concerns in a timely and compassionate manner.
- Lead quality improvement initiatives and participate in the development of policies to improve patient outcomes.
Job Requirements
- Valid RN (Registered Nurse) license in the state of practice
- BSN (Bachelor of Science in Nursing) required; MSN (Master of Science in Nursing) or related healthcare management degree preferred
- Minimum of 3-5 years of clinical experience in an Emergency Department setting
- At least 2 years of leadership or supervisory experience in a healthcare setting
- Current BLS (Basic Life Support) certification
- ACLS (Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support) certification required
- PALS (Pediatric Advanced Life Support) or ENPC (Emergency Nursing Pediatric Course) certification preferred
- CEN (Certified Emergency Nurse) certification is an advantage
- Strong understanding of emergency department operations and best practices
- Ability to lead and manage a diverse team of healthcare professionals
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills - Proficiency with electronic medical records (EMR) and healthcare informatics
- Knowledge of regulatory and accreditation standards (e.g., Joint Commission, CMS)
- Demonstrated ability to implement clinical guidelines, policies, and procedures
- Experience with staff scheduling, budgeting, and resource allocation
- Skill in conflict resolution, performance improvement, and staff development
- Ability to work in a high-stress environment while maintaining composure and patient-focused care.
