About the Job
GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES
Performs skilled and technical work requiring driving an ambulance or other emergency medical vehicle, rescuing or extricating victims, and administering basic and intermediate emergency medical care to patients at the scene and during transport to a hospital.
DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS
Like the EMT I's, employees in this class are part of two-person ambulance crews that respond to calls for emergency assistance within their assigned call area during their 12 hour shift of duty. They also function alternately as either the driver and assistant, or as the patient attender. This class differs from the EMT I by the requirement for administering drugs, starting IV's, and performing tasks such as application of MAST, EOA insertion, gastric suction and pulmonary ventilation. It differs from the EMT III-P by not being allowed to ride alone with an ALS (Advanced Life Support) patient, and by the requirement that a senior paramedic (EMT III or higher) be present anytime that ALS skills are performed. Employees must be able to quickly and accurately assess patient condition and initiate the proper medical treatment on the basic or intermediate life support level. If in the role of attender, may initiate advanced life support activities if a paramedic is present to observe, advise, and assist. Stabilizes and/or transports patient to requested or appropriate medical facility. Turns patient over to hospital emergency room staff, gives final report of patient injuries, symptoms, and status, and completes Ambulance Call Report and other manual or computerized documentation. Tact, courtesy, and firmness are required in dealing with patients, family members, and bystanders. Work is performed in accordance with established EMS protocols, standing orders, and standard operating procedures, but employees must exercise considerable independent judgment and decision making in diagnosing and treating patient conditions. Work is performed under the immediate supervision of a paramedic (EMT III-P) or other senior EMS employee, and is evaluated in an on-going manner by observation of the employee's ability to respond effectively to emergency situations.
