An Epic Nurse Champion is a nurse subject matter expert with additional responsibilities to promote the operational readiness and change management of nursing cohorts or departments in preparation for the future transition to Epic.
The Epic Nurse Champions participates in Epic system leadership, design, configuration, testing and training. They promote the implementation project to clinicians and administrators for all areas of nursing and other clinical ancillary areas, as well as supporting them in all associated efforts. The project team will leverage the Nurse Champion's experience and influence within the organization as decisions are made during the implementation.
The Nurse Champion has the ability to engage their clinician peers and foster their participation in key activities like the Workflow Walkthrough sessions, Advisory Councils, Integrated Workgroups, and Activation Support including Super User participation and engagement. The Epic implementation will not be successful without a sense of community ownership, and the Champion will be an advocate and liaison that connects the clinicians to the project.
- Provides leadership and direction regarding Epic implementation and continued use.
- Leverage clinical and operational expertise to ensure that the organization has a smooth transition to the EHR (Epic).
- Organizational leader; engaging & facilitating nursing and related ancillary participation in workflow design & validation around clinical applications in the Epic system.
- Serves as a point of contact for Chief Nursing Officer and works closely with other nursing leads to ensure transparency and efficiency in EHR build and structure.
- Support and promote the change management efforts necessary for a successful EHR transition
- Subject matter expert (SME) around innovative technology solutions to enhance clinical practice and adoption of Epic vendor technologies
- Build awareness, desire, knowledge, and ownership among clinicians to allow for a smooth transition to Epic
- Chair clinical committees tasked with validating clinical content, developing new content and decision support to promote quality initiatives involving Epic
- Coordinate activities with other clinical champions to insure engagement at every entity and department
- Participate in leadership and advisory council discussions as the voice of the clinician
- Influence IT Clinical Informatics decisions across the system, serving as a liaison between IT and clinical/ operational leadership
- Manage operational / clinical SMEs' engagement in design, system testing, and training activities
- Share best practices, reporting methodologies and encourage a system approach to decisions
- Assist clinicians in interpreting and integrating EHR program changes into their practice
- Drive efficiencies and quality improvements
- Maintain visibility and accessibility to staff and use a variety of methods to keep staff informed
- Maintain an awareness of regulatory standards and guidelines, as well as clinical practice standards, state licensure requirements and Magnet requirements
- Drive adoption of new solutions throughout clinical practices by insuring successful integration into workflows
- Serve as liaison to Magnet program and Nursing Education Sets the standard for behavior and provides and promotes a positive working environment for departmental staff to ensure strong employee morale, motivation and productivity.
- Holds accountability for the position and project areas of oversight budget and takes necessary action to remain within balance and address variances.
- Incorporates systems and procedures to ensure the Epic system role and function in the Hospital supports the delivery of the highest possible standard of patient care and service within available resources.
- Participates in build, testing, validation and training efforts to ensure best nursing practices are layered into the EHR.
- Maintains and reviews all aspects of corporate compliance as it relates to the use of the EHR.
- Anticipates issues affecting the department's function and activity that may affect service delivery to patients, staff and visitors, and ensures actions are taken to address issues in close cooperation with Administration and peers.
- Develops a strong, collaborative relationship with Administrators, peers, and other key individuals across the Hospital, and fosters a multi-disciplinary teamwork approach to decision-making and problem resolution.
- Develops strong relationships with appropriate external constituencies relevant to the department in order to promote community relations and marketing programs, thus ensuring the Hospital is responsive to the community's developing needs and maintains a favorable image in the eye of the community.
- Participates and promotes concepts of the Magnet Journey. Model Magnet principles to continuously elevate patient care at Salinas Valley Health in collaboration with the Nursing Service Departments. Applies principles established for in the Leader Accountability Grid attached.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Education: Graduate from an accredited nursing program. Bachelor's of Science in Nursing required.
Licensure: Current California Registered Nurse license required.
Certification: Epic Certification required. Certification in Clinical Documentation, Inpatient Orders or ASAP preferred. New hires and transfers have 45 days after Epic training to complete required Epic
Certification/Accreditation. Training and certification timeline must be completed with 90 days of
employment.
Experience/Knowledge: Three years clinical and managerial experience in an acute care hospital required. Critical Care experience required.
Substantial knowledge of:
• Current nursing principles, theories and practices.
• Laws, regulations and hospital guidelines pertaining to professional nursing care of patients.
• Principles of CQI and ability to apply these principles including PDSA to improve unit work.
• Ability to promote effective collaboration and teamwork among individuals of multiple disciplines and
across organizational boundaries.
• Fiscal management skills to prepare monitor and control budgets and reduce expenses.

The hourly rate for this position is $76.24. The range displayed on this job posting reflects the target for new hire salaries for this position.
