The Role:
We are looking for highly dedicated educators who bring an unwavering commitment to helping early childhood students succeed. KIPP DC’s early childhood teachers are responsible for using Tools of The Mind, Reading Workshop, and My Math curriculums to deliver effective, high-quality, rigorous instruction that produces academic results and student growth. KIPP DC gives its early childhood students an intensive foundation in the core academic subjects through play-based learning instruction and an emphasis on developing the social and emotional skills necessary to succeed in school and life. Assistant Teachers at KIPP DC work to develop a desire for learning in our youngest students. We are looking for creative and passionate Assistant Teachers to work in our PreK3 classrooms. KIPP DC’s Early Childhood Schools believe in using language, play, and authentic learning activities to provide our students with the foundation to build a successful and choice-filled life.

All early childhood assistant teacher positions are exempt and report to the school leader.
Collaboration. Through ample planning time, grade level and content meetings, and development and wellness days, teachers work collaboratively with peers at their school and across our six middle schools.
Growth. Teachers receive feedback and support from school leaders, network content coaches, grade-level chairs, and other teammates to improve their teaching craft. We also offer opportunities to develop leadership skills including grade-level chair, fellowships, and leadership cohorts.

Job Duties and Responsibilities:
- Work with a Lead Teacher to teach the designed curriculum so that all students reach grade level goals
- Leading small group reading and math instruction
- Leading some whole group instruction
- Meet weekly with assistant teacher and grade level chair to discuss and reflect upon weekly objectives and monthly themes
- Observe Lead Teachers and Capital Teaching Residents for best practices
- Meet weekly with all Assistant Teachers to participate in professional development workshops
- Cover classes while Lead Teachers are participating in weekly grade level meetings
- Assist Lead Teachers with the classroom's daily preparations which may include, but are not limited to:
- Materials preparation (copying, lamination, sorting, cutting, pasting, etc.)
- Assistance with delivery and cleanup of breakfast, lunch and snack
- Helping with monthly open houses
- Attend professional development sessions which may include, but are not limited to:
- Monthly sessions with School Leader
- Weekly meetings with Lead Teacher
- Daily feedback on lessons from Lead Teacher
- Observation feedback from school leader
- In-school professional development sessions and workshops
- The ability to lift and carry up to 40 pounds
- Additional responsibilities may arise during the school year. They will be communicated to all Assistant Teachers with as much notice and flexibility as possible.
Qualifications:
- High school diploma or General Education Development Certificate (Required)
- Bachelor’s degree (Preferred)
- Minimum of one year of experience working directly with children (Required)
- Commitment to working with underserved students (Required)
- Experience teaching in an urban school (Preferred)
- Demonstrate a passion for working with young children and dedicated to doing whatever it takes to provide the best education possible to the students of KIPP DC.
- Demonstrate knowledge of and the ability to assist in instructing reading, writing, and mathematics.
- Must be energetic, collaborative, reliable, flexible and integrity-driven
- Strong communication skills in order to ensure effective, positive interactions with their teaching team, staff, families, and children
Compensation & Benefits:
- When it comes to compensation, at KIPP DC we strive for clarity, equity, and to be highly competitive. We look at compensation benchmarks in schools across DC. Assistant Teacher salaries are exempt and start at $36,167 and increase with years of experience. Please see the salary scale here. Assistant Teachers can earn up to $2,000 in renewal add-ons to their base salary each year they return to KIPP DC.
- KIPP DC offers a robust benefits package including medical, dental, and vision insurances; various voluntary benefits; and employer paid benefits such as short term disability, long term disability, life insurance, and a membership to One Medical.
- KIPP DC also offers a 403(b) retirement account with a 3% employer contribution and a 3% match with vesting after three years.
- Currently, individuals in this role have up to 10 paid sick days, 12 paid holidays, paid Thanksgiving week break, winter break, spring break, and summer break. This is subject to change and your exact schedule will be shared in your offer letter.
- All employees who use public transit through WMATA are eligible for pre-tax deductions for transportation costs.
