About the Job
**Overview**
PNNL seeks an Earth Scientist with experience in interdisciplinary collaborations to conduct research on the effects of global change on coupled human-natural systems and to develop innovative solutions to support climate and energy resilience for communities and infrastructure across the US. This position will support a variety of research projects grounded in social-ecological systems including:
+ Advancing climate vulnerability assessment methods in support of climate security,
+ Developing approaches and tools to understand and respond to the needs of coastal remote, island, and islanded communities engaging in renewable energy transitions and climate adaption, and
+ Developing methods for integrating measures of the social benefits and costs of renewable energy development in coastal communities into the energy planning process.
This position requires excellent technical, organizational, communication, and independent research skills as well as an aptitude for interdisciplinary collaboration, not only with other scientists but with regional partners, coastal communities, in particular Tribal communities, colleagues at the U.S. Departments of Energy and Defense, and other stakeholders. As a level 2 scientist, this role will include managing or co-managing tasks, supporting larger research efforts, opportunities to develop or support new proposal concepts, publish research findings, and mentor more junior staff.
**Responsibilities**
+ Lead subtasks or tasks on projects related to the application of sensitivity and adaptive capacity in climate vulnerability assessment.
+ Conduct original research to advance the understanding of the distribution of benefits and burdens of offshore wind development on the West Coast.
+ Support community-based renewable energy planning in remote and coastal communities.
+ Lead and contribute to scientific, peer-reviewed publications.
+ Mentor junior staff.
+ Lead and/or collaborate on proposals.
**Qualifications**
Minimum Qualifications:
+ BS/BA and 2 years of relevant experience -OR-
+ MS/MA -OR-
+ PhD
Preferred Qualifications:
+ Ph.D. in earth or environmental science, geography, environmental economics, natural resource economics, marine science, ecology, or a related discipline.
+ Experience using a variety of quantitative and qualitative research approaches applicable to understanding how environmental change can affect human communities.
+ Experience in the science of climate vulnerability assessment.
+ Experience with co-production methods and working with coastal communities, in particular Tribal communities.
+ Demonstrated interest and ability to publish work in peer-reviewed journals.
+ Experience working with collaborators with diverse backgrounds and interdisciplinary teams.
+ Knowledge and experience engaging in science-policy processes, such as applications of social-ecological science to sustainable development, climate adaptation, conservation, and/or renewable energy transitions.
+ Experience mentoring interns and junior staff.
+ Demonstrated technical writing ability and strong communications skills.

To obtain this credential, new employees must successfully complete and pass a Federal Tier 1 background check investigation. This investigation includes a declaration of illegal drug activities, including use, supply, possession, or manufacture within the last year. This includes marijuana and cannabis derivatives, which are still considered illegal under federal law, regardless of state laws.

Starting pay is calculated from the minimum of the pay range and actual placement in the range is determined based on an individual's relevant job-related skills, qualifications, and experience.
