Responsibilities/Job Description:Job Summary:
The Emergency Room Technician (ERT) assists the professional nurse in delivering patient care, transporting patients and equipment, setting up and maintaining patient rooms, and managing supplies. Depending on unit needs and the discretion of the professional nurse, the ERT may be assigned patient care responsibilities.
Job Expectations:
Patient Care:
- Assist Professional Nurse: Help in patient care activities, following the nurse's guidance.
- Monitor Vital Signs: Provide emergency care by keeping track of patients’ vital signs.
- Patient Care Tasks: Perform point of care testing, IV setup, IV discontinuation, enema, suture removal, restraint application, catheterization, and 12 lead EKG as advised by RN.
- Transport Patients: Use wheelchair and cart to move patients.
- Assist with Medical Equipment: Measure and fit patients with casts, crutches, immobilizers, and splints.
- Assist with Ambulation and Positioning: Help patients move and position themselves.
- Transport Medical Samples: Move blood, urine, and other samples under RN direction.
- Support During Procedures: Assist doctors and nurses during procedures (e.g., eye lavage, ear irrigation, dressing changes, pelvic exam specimen collection).
- Patient Communication: Relay patient/family observations and concerns to RN.
- Respond to Requests: Address patient call lights/requests promptly.
- Ensure Privacy and Dignity: Maintain patient dignity, privacy, and confidentiality.
- Adapt to Patient Needs: Modify tasks as needed for different ages and developmental abilities.
- Accurate Procedures: Adhere to correct procedures.
- Assist in Resuscitation: Support resuscitation efforts with CPR and bag/valve mask.
- Safety: Act as a patient safety sitter and report observations to RN.
- Documentation: Record patient care activities and procedures clearly, concisely, accurately, and promptly.
Room/Unit Maintenance:
- Restock Supplies: Ensure rooms, supplies, carts, and oxygen tanks are stocked.
- Room Clean-Up: Clean patient rooms between uses.
- Checklists: Complete room and cart checklists.
Equipment Quality Control:
- Quality Checks: Perform quality control on designated equipment.
- Report Issues: Notify RN of discrepancies and malfunctions.
Medication Transport:
- Transport Medication: Move medication from delivery to the Emergency Room department.
Basic Life Support (BLS for Healthcare Providers): Certification required upon hire and must be maintained throughout employment. OnTrack participants must obtain BLS certification upon completing the OnTrack program.
One of the following certifications or statuses is required for hire:
- Current EMT or ERT certification upon hire.
- Current Paramedic Certification.
- Current certification on the Minnesota Nursing Assistant Registry upon hire. (This certification does not need to be maintained throughout employment. Individuals who have completed a Nursing Assistant program and are scheduled to take the NA Registry exam will be granted 90 days post-hire to become active on the Minnesota Nursing Assistant Registry.)
- Current enrollment in an LPN, RN, or Nurse Practitioner program, and completion of one (1) semester of clinical rotation within the program.
- Six months of recent direct patient care experience in an acute care, long-term care, or home care setting. (Appropriate roles may include Nursing Assistant, PCA, or Resident Assistant.)
- Successful completion of Fairview’s OnTrack Nursing Assistant training program.
- LPN licensure upon hire. (This licensure does not need to be maintained throughout employment.)
Preferred Qualifications:
- Education: Relevant educational background related to the role.
- Experience:
- Previous Emergency Room experience of 1 or more years as an Emergency Room Scribe, paramedic, ERT, EMT, EDT, or ED EMS.
- Current CNA or NST experience of 1 or more years.
- License/Certification/Registration:
- Paramedic, EMT, ERT, LPN, CNA, PCA.
