The Engineering Manager is responsible for the day-to-day operations of the engineering department. In the absence of the Director, the Engineering Manager will assume the administrative, financial and operating aspects of the hotel as they relate to engineering.
The Engineering Manager plays several roles within the Engineering Department. The incumbent will be a working Manager who must be knowledgeable in many areas of General Maintenance and Building Utilities repair. As well as being capable in many areas of responsibility, the incumbent will supervise the daily job assignments and other associated duties of our Guest Room Engineers, Carpenters, Masons, Certified Pool Operators (CPO’s), Painters and Landscapers. The Engineering manager should be familiar with the operation and maintenance of water heaters, HVAC package units, commercial ice machines and other similar equipment. The applicant should have minimum 5 years’ construction experience, possess both knowledge and experience of commonly used concepts, practices and procedures within the carpentry and construction fields, demonstrate working experience for carpentry, landscaping, brickwork, as well as light electrical, pumps, and motors plumbing, irrigation knowledge, and have the ability be certified in Pool Operations Management within the first 90 days of employment. This position requires strong problem solving and decision making abilities concerning safety, projects, and cost management. The incumbent will work on Staff schedules to ensure full coverage. The ability to follow and update standard operating procedures (SOP’s), and keeping up with daily paperwork and our maintenance tracking program is also crucial.
Responsibilities:- Assist in developing and implementing plans to maintain property, equipment, grounds and other assets in a safe and acceptable state of repair.
- Ensure the hotel is in compliance with all local, state and federal laws.
- Supervise and train all Engineering staff in Customer Service, Empowerment, Standard Operating Procedures and Loss Prevention.
- Create and post all Engineering staffs schedules.
- Create and adhere to annual budget for department.
- Assist in developing financial forecasts and actively participate in monthly profit/loss review meetings.
- Create and implement preventative maintenance program for all hotel equipment.
- Ensure all emergency and life safety equipment and systems are inspected, tested and certified per Highgate Hotel standards.
- Assist with the administration of all vendor contracts controlled by the engineering department.
- Ensure that room maintenance requests are handled in a prompt and courteous manner.
- Assist as necessary with special projects and renovations.
- At least 3 years of supervisory or lead mechanic experience in a hotel or a related field; or a technical certificate with at least 1 year of supervisory or lead mechanic experience.
- Stationary engineer’s license if required by local code.
- HVAC, electrical, plumbing, boiler operations and general maintenance skills required
- High school diploma or equivalent required
- Long hours sometimes required.
- Heavy work – Exerting up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, and /or 50 pounds of force frequently and/or up to 20 pounds of force constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects.

- Comply with Highgate Hotel Standards and regulations to encourage safe and efficient hotel operations.
- Maximize efforts towards productivity, identify problem areas and assist in implementing solutions.
- Must be effective in handling problems, including anticipating, preventing, identifying and solving problems as necessary.
- Must be able to understand and evaluate complex information, data, etc. from various sources to meet appropriate objectives.
- Must be able to maintain confidentiality of information.
- Perform other duties as requested by management.
