Job Purpose
Kansas City Kansas Community College (KCKCC) is currently searching for Adult Education ESL instructors that will provide learner centered instruction to teach non-native speakers English. Emphasis will be on reading, vocabulary development, listening, speaking, writing, and grammar. They will ensure compliance with all aspects of English as a Second Language as required by the Adult and Family Literacy Act (AFELA), the Kansas Board of Regents (KBOR), and Kansas City Kansas Community College (KCKCC). Instruction will include adult students, 18 years of age or older, at all levels of language acquisition. There may be additional sections to be taught at any location including daytime, online, virtually and/or at area high schools. This is a POOL position and application materials are accepted on an on-going basis throughout the year for consideration.
Position Description
- Teach English as a Second Language, basic computer skills, civics/citizenship, employability skills and life skills.
- Create and implement daily lesson plans which utilize a variety of effective teaching strategies to engage and motivate adult learners, addressing diverse learning modalities, abilities, needs and interests through differentiated instruction to ensure every student makes adequate progress related to their learning goals.
- Teach adult learners in a variety of learning environments including on campus, remotely and at business partnership sites.
- Prepare students to achieve educational attainment, secure employment, retain/improve employment, transition to post-secondary, college readiness, citizenship skills, and other goals set forth by the program or the Kansas Board of Regents.
- Supplement classroom instruction with on-line resources.
- Maintain and submit all necessary records for state and federal reports in a timely manner.
- Advise with students during enrollment week and at a minimum every three weeks thereafter regarding test scores, goals, roadblocks, study resources, academic progress, and other topics specific to individual students’ progress and document sessions appropriately.
- Administer assessments to students as necessary or set forth by KBOR Proficiency Attainment Model (PAM).
- Communicate with absent students via phone or email and record communication on shared contact log.
- Navigate and employ the use of the Adult Education Student Information System (AESIS).
- Engage in staff development activities/meetings with other adult education staff, both within and outside of KCKCC, during the academic year to enhance quality of instruction.
- Ensure attention to detail and accurate record keeping.
- Demonstrate strong interpersonal and collaboration skills.
- Perform other duties as assigned by the Assistant Director/Director.
- Possess strong written and oral communication skills.
- Must demonstrate a commitment to and ability to work with a diverse student and faculty population.
- High energy, self-starter, who can work with minimal supervision.
- Ability to develop and maintain excellent working relationships and establish credibility with all levels of employee in the organization.
- Detail oriented.
- Working knowledge of Microsoft 365 applications, especially Word, Excel, and Outlook.
- Ability to manage several projects with multiple deadlines simultaneously.
Position Qualifications and/or Education
Minimum Qualifications and/or Education
- Bachelor’s degree or higher in Education, Adult Education, English as a Second Language, or a related area.
- Experience teaching, tutoring, or training English as a Second Language.
- Working within a diverse environment of active learners.
Preferred Qualifications and/or Education
- Certificate or master’s degree or higher in Teaching English as a Second Language from an accredited university.
- Experience collaborating with adult learners.
- Experience living in another country and/or speaking a second language.
- Teaching experience, especially in Adult Education, High School Equivalency, or ESL classes.

Work Schedule
Cannot exceed 29 hours per week and the exact hours vary depending on location and need. Must be able to work a variable schedule/hour to meet operational needs. May require evening and weekend hours. Your appointment is contingent on sufficient enrollments, or on program and scheduling changes.
