Ashland has an exciting opportunity for a Environmental Specialist to join our Ashland LLC, Specialty ingredients business at our Hopewell, VA facility. This is a very visible, significant role within the Company and the Compliance function. This position will report to the EHS Manager.
This position will support Environmental programs in our chemical manufacturing operations in Hopewell, VA. This may include training support, leading environmental related investigations, and maintaining certifications or permits as necessary.
The responsibilities of the position include, but are not limited to, the following:
Maintain and apply knowledge of current policies, regulations, and industrial processes including OSHA, EPA, ISO 14001, RC 14001, RCRA, and Ashland Corporate Standards.
Responsible for review of Management of Change for Environmental related items
Support environmental compliance audits and inspections
Responds to environmental issues as needed
Responsible for facility’s hazardous and non-hazardous waste program
Generates reports for federal, state and local agencies
Participate, coordinate or lead Root Cause Analysis investigations
Assist in writing / revising Plant Environmental procedures
Assists with supporting Sustainability goals for the site
Participates in Quality, Safety and Environmental initiatives that will contribute to compliance of State/Federal regulations and improve existing Company programs.
In order to be qualified for this role, you must possess the following:
Bachelors Degree in Chemistry, Biology, Environmental Studies, Engineering or another relevant/technical field.
1-2 years of work experience in environmental programs
Excellent verbal and written communications, and attention to detail
Proven data analysis and problem-solving skills
The following skills sets are preferred by the business unit:
Understanding of local, federal environmental policies
Familiarity with RCRA regulations
Experience in participating in regulatory inspections or audits
PHYSICAL / MENTAL REQUIREMENTS
Individual must be able to respond appropriately during site emergencies as directed by the Site Emergency Manager. Must be capable of evacuating the manufacturing process areas in a timely manner should an emergency situation arise. The candidate must also be able to wear and properly utilize appropriate personal protective equipment if required to work or visit within the manufacturing process area. This may include hard hat, safety glasses, respirators, ear plugs, steel-toed shoes, or other equipment as required by the work performed and location the work is being performed. Other physical activities may include walking, climbing stairs, bending, stooping, kneeling, lifting up to 25 lbs., or reaching depending on the work activity required. Work is performed in an office/plant environment with frequent trips to the operating units to assess equipment or processes, perform inspections and/or collect data. May be required to operate Company vehicle on Company business. Confined space entry may be required. Training required to perform the job properly may require this position to travel around the United States of America.
