The Opportunity
RS&H is seeking an Environmental Specialist to join our Transportation Practice in our Miami or Ft. Lauderdale, FL office!
Job Summary: This professional environmental science consulting opportunity will be heavily involved in transportation and other vital infrastructure work for clients including state Departments of Transportation, Tolling Authorities, and Transit Agencies, but also aviation, aerospace, and other clients both public and private. This position requires the application of scientific knowledge and experience to perform a variety of assignments in all conventional aspects of environmental consulting for projects of moderate size and complexity. This position requires familiarity with the National Environmental Policy Act of 1969 (NEPA), environmental permitting, Project Development and Environment (PD&E) studies, or various types of mitigation compliance and maintenance (e.g., wetlands, trees, listed species, traffic noise and air quality, etc.), this position will build on and expand your expertise. As an Environmental Consultant I in the Infrastructure organization of RS&H, Transportation Development service group, you can gain valuable experience and contribute to projects and programs on the forefront of many leading environmental challenges of our times such as resilient infrastructure adaptation, planning and construction, sustainability planning, natural resources management and improving the quality of the natural and human environment.
This position requires independent judgment and adaptation/modification of standard scientific techniques, procedures, and criteria, and must be able to independently solve problems and make decisions, receiving technical guidance on unusual or complex issues and supervisory approval on proposed project plans.
In this position you may work directly with RS&H’s clients such as the Florida Department of Transportation as embedded staff augmentation to support their projects and programs.
Essential Functions:
- Performs a variety of assignments of moderate scope including but not limited to data compilation and analysis, both in the field and the office, as well as researching and assisting with report, and/or study preparation. Adjusts and correlates data, and follows operations through a series of related, detailed steps. Assignments have clear and specific objectives requiring investigation of a limited set of variables. Writes sections of plans for projects of moderate size and complexity. Prepares portions of project documents utilizing advanced software and technology. (Technical expertise)
- May serve as a task leader or project manager on small stand-alone projects, or task leader on larger more complex projects, assisting with on-call task orders and has the ability to make recommendations within the scope of experience and training. (Project management)
- May serve as a small team supervisor (1-3 associates), growing in responsibility for growth and development of staff working on tasks/projects under their supervision as the practice grows. (People leadership)
- May assist with development of client presentation material. Participates in client meetings. May co-lead the delivery of client presentations. Client Interaction is frequent, sometimes with minimum supervision. (Client interaction)
- Assists in the identification, tracking, and other activities for various project pursuits. Prepares discrete portions of proposals as part of a team, including cost estimates, creative layout, and research. (Business development)
- Participates in industry events as assigned or needed. (Industry engagement)
- Performs all other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree from an accredited program or equivalent experience in the biological, environmental, and/or chemical sciences.
- Minimum five years relevant experience.
Proficient in Microsoft Office products (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, etc.).
Must possess strong oral and written communications skills. Must have the ability to effectively interact with and build strong relationships with clients, customers, contractors, and other key stakeholders.
A valid Florida driver’s license. A driver’s license records check, criminal history records check, and a fingerprint check are required. Successful candidates may be required to travel to project locations for field reviews, data collection, and/or meetings.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Assignments also involve field studies for data collection, sometimes under adverse outdoor conditions. In-water experience with skin diving or SCUBA certification is a plus.
- Additional advantageous skills include use of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV, aka drones), Geographic Information Systems (GIS) such as ArcGIS Pro or other in the ESRI Ecosystem of GIS Software, Global Positioning Systems (GPS) for field studies, acoustic and/or visual monitoring for bat surveys.
Physical Demands:
- Able to sit and/or stand for prolonged periods of time. Occasionally required to sit and stoop.
- Able to lift and/or move up to 25 pounds.
- Able to work outdoors under various weather conditions.
