The Division of Hematology & Medical Oncology at Oregon Health & Science University (OHSU) is seeking a highly-qualified translational or clinical researcher in Lung Cancer and Thoracic Malignancies for the Knight Cancer Institute.

The successful candidate will ensure the university’s mission and goals of research, patient care, teaching, and outreach, and public service are met. Keys for the successful candidate shall be a Clinical or translational physician investigator, with the intellectual vision to develop and expand lung cancer research at the Knight Cancer Institute.
This position is eligible for endowment. The successful applicant for this position will be nominated for this endowment, subject to OHSU policies governing such appointments, including length and term of the appointment, and subject to approval by the Dean of the School of Medicine and the OHSU Provost.
Function/Duties of Position:The appointee shall provide services as assigned by the supervisor in furtherance of the university’s missions and goals of teaching, research, patient care, outreach and public service. The appointee shall be a Clinical or translational physician investigator, with the intellectual vision to develop and expand lung research at the Knight. They will be given immediate access to funds and will be tasked with marrying the Knight’s appetite for innovation with a vision that expand OHSU’s lung cancer footprint, relevance in the market and impact to patients. This position reports to (supervisor): Division Head, Hematology & Medical Oncology.
The duties of this position include:
- Oversee clinical and research expansion within the service line
- Work closely with leadership to identify and build collaborations across the Knight, marrying the existing strengths in research with a vision that builds the lung cancer service line to prominence in clinical care and research impact.
- Direct the development of a comprehensive lung program at the Knight Cancer Institute
- Establish an innovative research portfolio
- Coordinate with institutional leaders to advance clinical growth
- Build collaborations that advance the treatment of lung cancer
- Dedicate 50% of time to building clinical research
The duties of this position are in support of the missions, goals and objectives of OHSU and the School of Medicine and include: participate in the education of medical students and house staff in accordance with assignments to the department by the Curriculum Committee and Chair; care of patients with lung cancer; establish and maintain a program of scholarly activity directed toward improved understanding of the causes, detection and treatment of lung cancer; carry out basic research in division research space assigned by the Division Head; participate in administrative committees and councils of the OHSU as approved by the Chair and Division Head; engage in public service through consultative activities with non-university groups with knowledge and consent of the Chair and Division Head.
It is anticipated the position will be made up of the following components: Clinical, teaching research/academic, and inpatient service.
Required Qualifications:- MD, MD/PhD, or equivalent
- Must qualify for the rank of Associate Professor or full Professor at OHSU
- M.D. board certification in medical oncology and eligibility to obtain a license to practice medicine in Oregon
The ideal candidate will be a collaborative and creative individual with a distinguished publication and funding record in lung cancer research. Other key competencies:
- A proven physician leader who is intimately familiar with hospital organizations and functions;
- Ability to lead a strong lung cancer research program that advances the clinical and translational research agenda of the Knight;
- Experience managing clinical trials;
- Previous experience building or expanding a program, group, or initiative within an NCI designated cancer center;
- A commitment to developing and fostering a multidisciplinary, collaborative approach to cancer services and patient-centered care;
- Record of excellence in patient care;
- Demonstrated ability to build strong, sustainable partnerships.
- Personal and professional commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion, and experience working with and fostering a diverse faculty, staff, and student environment.
- Demonstrated business and financial management skills, including budget management and revenue generation.
