San Mateo County Health is looking for a well-qualified individual for the position of Family Partner Support Worker I/II - Behavioral Health - Prenatal to Three Team - Extra Help to, under immediate supervision, provide support, wellness/recovery and educational services to family/caregivers of behavioral health and recovery or family health program services; participate as members of our service provision teams; and perform duties as assigned.
The current vacancy is an extra help position with the Prenatal to Three Team in the Behavioral Health and Recovery Services (BHRS) Division. The position is located in San Mateo, but will travel throughout the County to transport clients, attend meetings, conduct home visits, and rarely travel to neighboring counties as needed.
This Family Partner will provide peer support to families, and assist in identifying community resources that focus on wellness, resiliency and recovery in order to enhance health and family life satisfaction. Family Partners collaborate with family members of clients and staff to develop treatment goals that are based on consumer and family strengths.
This Family Partner will support the family members of clients 0-5 years of age. The Family Partner will work closely to support the family members in order to improve the wellness and recovery of the client and family. This position requires working some after hours, between 5:00 p.m. and 8:00 p.m. when needed.
This Family Partner will work closely with the clinical team, with a family member perspective; support families when their loved one is entering mental health treatment; provide orientation to psychiatric services, the behavioral health system and other systems; supporting family members to access community resources and supports such as NAMI and Al-Anon; share parts of their own story as a family member of someone who has or is receiving mental health or substance use services, as appropriate; and facilitate psycho-educational and/or support groups with family members.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS
Family Partner Support Worker I is the entry level class in the series. Initially under close supervision, incumbents learn the duties associated with the position and the client population served. Incumbents receive on-the-job training and perform specific assignments of a well-defined and limited nature. As experience is gained, there is greater independence of action within established guidelines. This class is flexibly staffed with Peer Support Worker II and incumbents may advance to the higher level after gaining experience and demonstrating proficiency which meet the qualifications of the higher-level class.
Family Partner Support Worker II is the experienced level class in the series. Employees are able to perform the full range of duties required of the classification and have significant latitude for independent judgment. Employees exercise considerable discretion in determining work priorities as well as methods of completing their assignments.
Positions in this series are further distinguished by the ability to meet the experience requirements required by the funding sources related to the assigned unit or program.
NOTE: The expectation for this position is that the candidate hired will complete the Peer Support Specialist training and obtain Certification as a Medi-Cal Peer Support Specialist. BHRS provides the required Peer Support Specialist training. After completion of the required Peer Support Specialist training, the incumbent can then go into the Peer Support Specialist I classification. Peer Support Specialist I’s are required to obtain Certification as a Medi-Cal Peer Support Specialist within eighteen (18) months.
NOTE: This is an extra-help, at-will assignment, paid on an hourly basis. Extra-help hours are dependent on the business needs of the department and therefore work hours may vary from week to week. Extra help employees shall not exceed 1,040 hours of work per fiscal year. Some extra help positions are eligible for benefits under the Affordable Care Act. Extra help employees are not guaranteed permanent status at the end of the assignment.

- Have lived experience as a parent or direct caregiver of a child 0-5 years of age, who has experienced behavioral health challenges.
- Have used their lived experience as a parent or caregiver to support and assist parents and families whose children 0-5 years of age have experienced behavioral health, juvenile justice, child welfare and/or substance use issues.
- Be experienced in effectively interacting and communicating with caregivers and family members of youth with mental health or substance use challenges.
- Be experienced working in juvenile detention settings and/or with youth on probation.
- Have experience working with the Latino and BIPOC communities.
- Have knowledge of the Individualized Education Plan (IEP) process.
