POSITION SUMMARY
The Fire Protection Engineer will lead and manage a team of engineers and designers, overseeing all aspects of fire protection system design and engineering within Ironsmith Fire. This role will be pivotal in ensuring that our projects meet the highest standards of quality, safety, and innovation. The successful candidate will be responsible for preparing shop drawings for fabrication and installation, managing submittals to clients and Authorities Having Jurisdiction (AHJ's), ensuring compliance with all relevant codes and standards, and driving continuous improvement in technology and processes. Additionally, this role includes responsibility for presales engineering and post-release project management.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Lead and mentor a team of engineers and designers, fostering a culture of collaboration, accountability, and continuous improvement.
Ensure adherence to Ironsmith Fire's core values in all engineering activities. Oversee the preparation of detailed shop drawings for fabrication and installation of fire protection systems.
Perform and review hydraulic calculations to ensure systems are designed efficiently and effectively.
Ensure all designs comply with relevant codes, standards, and regulations. Manage the preparation and submission of engineering documents to clients and AHJ's, ensuring timely approval.
Ensure all submittals meet client requirements and are compliant with industry standards and local regulations.
Implement and maintain quality control processes within the engineering team to ensure the highest level of workmanship.
Drive innovation in design and engineering processes, leveraging new technologies and methodologies to improve efficiency and effectiveness.
Stay current with industry trends and advancements in fire protection engineering and incorporate relevant technologies into Ironsmith Fire's practices.
Lead initiatives to improve design and engineering tools, software, and processes. Collaborate with the sales team during presales engineering to develop solutions that meet client needs and project requirements.
Oversee post-release project management, ensuring projects are executed on time, within budget, and to the satisfaction of clients.
OBJECTIVES
Deliver high-quality, compliant, and innovative fire protection system designs. Ensure all engineering projects are completed on time, within scope, and within budget.
Drive continuous improvement in engineering processes and technologies. Assign tasks to design team members, set project priorities, and monitor progress to ensure projects are completed on time and within budget.
Coordinate with other departments, such as Sales, Installation, Purchasing, and Fabrication to ensure seamless execution of the contract.
Conduct performance evaluations, provide feedback, and identify opportunities for skills development and career advancement within the team.
Review and approve design drawings, calculations, and specifications prepared by the design team to ensure accuracy, completeness, and compliance.
Implement quality control processes and procedures to minimize errors and ensure consistency in design deliverables.
Provide technical guidance and expertise to the design team, resolving complex design issues and offering solutions to challenging design problems.
Cultivate strong relationships with clients, architects, engineers, contractors, and regulatory authorities, serving as a trusted advisor and liaison throughout the design process.
Research and evaluate fire sprinkler design software options available in the market to identify tools that best meet the needs and requirements of the design team and the projects they work on.
Lead the implementation of selected design software within the design team, ensuring seamless integration with existing workflows and processes.
Develop and oversee training programs for the Engineering team.
Develop templates, libraries, and customizations within the design software to streamline repetitive tasks, improve productivity, and maintain consistency across projects. Analyze metrics and KPI's associated with this position to assess progress towards goals and identify areas for improvement of the Engineering team.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
Hold a Professional Engineer (PE) license in Fire Protection Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a related discipline.
Ten plus years of experience in fire sprinkler system design and engineering, with progressively increasing levels of responsibility including leadership or a managerial role, such as a team lead or project manager.
Professional certifications related to fire protection, business management, or leadership are advantageous, such as NICET Certification.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
The ability to maintain a high level of energy and stamina to manage long hours, travel requirements, and the stress associated with high-level decision making.
The ability to travel to meet with clients and team members in different locations. While primarily a skill, the physical aspect includes the ability to speak clearly and effectively in public and private settings, and to engage in face-to-face meetings. Good general health to fulfill job responsibilities effectively, including being able to work long hours when necessary.
