Position Summary:
Provide individualized support to students to ensure timely graduation and postsecondary readiness. Responsibilities include offering tutoring, homework assistance, and academic intervention, as well as managing student support services and case management. Regularly connect with students to guide graduation planning, assist with goal setting, and facilitate access to college and career planning tools (e.g., WOIS, Career Cruising). Mentor and advise students and families on academic success, postsecondary readiness, and post-high school planning to ensure a smooth transition into their chosen paths.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Develop positive relationships and work in collaboration with school district programs such as AVID, community organizations, school district personnel, students and families.
Connect students and families to necessary resources for academic advisement, assessment, tutorial support and post-secondary planning.
Explain to students and parents the benefits of post-secondary education; encourage college visits, test preparation and participation; connect with college recruiters or partner programs that offer educational and career exploration.
Provide mentoring and advising for academic success, high school and college readiness skills and post-high school planning to both students and parents.
Work with school counselors to provide students and families with appropriate college admission and financial aid information.
Arrange field trips, guest speakers and workshop opportunities to allow students to explore future options.
Facilitate required GEAR UP curricula for students and families.
Collaborate with advisory teachers to provide GEAR UP resources to students.
Collaborate with administrators and other staff to plan, organize, promote and facilitate quarterly family workshops.
Complete monthly, quarterly, and annual GEAR UP program evaluation documentation.
Complete and turn in monthly calendars for upcoming events/scheduled visits and/or student meetings to GEAR UP administrator and principal.
Record contacts with students, family, community members and staff members.
Compile, analyze and utilize data to best support students in meeting GEAR UP benchmarks.
Maintain confidentiality of student information.
Keep current in field by participating in professional development opportunities.
Attend staff meetings and trainings as scheduled.
May include other supports determined by the GEAR UP Advisor or supervisor.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Education/Experience:
BA/BS degree, preferably in social work, education, psychology or counseling. May substitute for an AA degree with at least two years of relevant experience.
Experience working with families from a low socio-economic background.
Bilingual preferred
Working knowledge of high school graduation requirements, post-secondary options, financial aid, and school culture.
Certificates/Licenses:
• Earn Type II driver’s license status for the Aberdeen School District.
Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:
Ability to establish and maintain positive relationships with parents, staff, students and community. (or general public)
Interacts positively with students, families, staff, community and administration.
Ability to work cooperatively and successfully with all staff, students and community.
Ability to work in a team environment.
Ability to work flexible hours as assigned, maintains current knowledge in assigned field, and able to organize own time for work completion.
Ability to work calmly and flexibly in challenging situations.
Ability and willingness to advocate and assist students at risk of not graduating to stay in school.
Knowledge and experience working with community social services and resource agencies.
Knowledge and understanding of state/federal laws and regulations regarding education and social services.
Knowledge of school policies, including Special Education, Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973, and school law to understand students’ rights and responsibilities.
Strong skills in language, grammar, and mathematics
Possesses good listening skills; is able to express thoughts clearly in verbal and written communications.
Ability to learn and willingness to use technology and various software programs.
Knowledge of data collection procedures and general clerical duties.
Ability to attend to detail and follow task through to completion.
Ability to organize and set priorities.
Ability to work effectively under pressure and be flexible to meet deadlines.
Remains objective, fair, and open-minded.
Maintains a high level of confidentiality.
Ability to compute rate, ratio and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs.
Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out detailed but uninvolved written or oral instructions.
Ability to deal with problems working with a few concrete variables in standardized situations.
Experience working with families with low economic-status.
Desired effective characteristics include: flexibility, enthusiasm, willingness to develop relationships and willingness to learn new skills.
Willingness to make home visits.
FBI and Washington State Patrol background clearance required.
