Mission and Culture
The Department of Natural Resources mission is to develop, conserve, and maximize the use of Alaska’s natural resources consistent with the public interest. The GIS Services Unit supports that mission by providing the highest quality GIS data and maps to support the Department’s decision-making processes.
The GIS Service Unit is made up of a group of dedicated professionals committed to serving the public and the employees of DNR. The work environment is focused on understanding and learning. Core Responsibilities
This position is responsible for the creation, maintenance, and quality control of DNR’s spatial data. DNR’s spatial databases house the GIS data for management activity on state owned land and water at a parcel level. This includes land ownership, land classifications and restrictions, state and federal surveys, and surface and subsurface authorizations on land and water owned or managed by DNR.
Under general supervision this position uses GIS software, spatial geodatabases, and tabular databases to perform GIS data creation and data analysis. The incumbents must be able to use land records and land status research, mapping projections and coordinate systems, relational databases, surveys, and DNR business practices to create, edit, and analyze spatial data in ArcPro to provide accurate GIS data for the public and for the DNR land management adjudication process. This position must also be able to incorporate the use of aerial photography and imagery, DNR’s existing spatial geodatabases, data derived from other departments, and be able to apply cartographic standards and graphic design to create specialized GIS projects such as hard copy maps and online mapping applications.

The Working Environment You Can Expect
While most of the work can be performed via telework within the state of Alaska, we have office space available in Anchorage (Robert B. Atwood Building).
Who We Are Looking For
To receive an interview, you need to demonstrate the following desired knowledge, skills, abilities, and experience within your application profile:
- Experience with the Esri suite of GIS products, including ArcPro and AGOL, and their extensions, and experience with Microsoft Office 365, including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, and Teams
- Experience with projects that involve data creation and editing, quality control processes, and requiring strong analytical skills and attention to detail
- Experience with land records and land status research, including using recorded documents, BLM documents, Alaska Mapper, and other land records resources
- Experience with collecting, preparing, and analyzing GIS information and creating end products using that information
- Experience with creating and updating parcel data using survey plats related to natural resources and land management information, and legal descriptions such as metes and bounds and aliquot parts
