Job Overview:
The Grounds Technician I performs routine and extensive preventative maintenance and repair procedures as directed on grounds, parking garage, turf grass, shrubs, trees, and other plants, including courtyards; care and maintenance of fences, roadways, driveways, parking lots, pavements, walkways, amphitheater, ponds, fountains; and, related work to support operations to sustain Casino buildings, and infrastructure.

Duties and Responsibilities:
- Completes all work outdoors and some tasks may be performed regardless of weather conditions
- Perform tasks common to the care of grounds and landscapes by seeding, watering, mulching, to outside plantings, lawns and turf, as well as inside flowers and cuttings used in transplanting; inspecting plant materials for insects, disease, physical and mechanical damage and identifying replacements; transplanting, pruning, trimming, and cultivating trees, shrubs, ground cover, and flowers; and storing and caring for bulbs and cuttings in the winter season.
- Perform regular and directed grounds and landscape maintenance by mowing lawns with riding or push mowers; trimming and edging around trees, shrubs, ground cover, flowers, sidewalks and buildings; pruning and trimming trees and shrubs, weeding, thinning and cleaning flower beds and other grounds by hand or utilizing proper tools and equipment; and setting up, adjusting, repairing, and cleaning irrigation systems.
- Perform inspections, general maintenance and repairs of all casino buildings by installing, removing, repairing and maintaining landscape lighting, signs, cables, chains, barricades, gates, bicycle racks, feeders, posts, fences, and rock walls; and repairing roadways, parking lots, athletic fields, tennis courts, track and artificial turf, as applicable.
- Remove trash and debris from public areas by regularly inspecting grounds, drains, manhole covers, etc., for debris; raking, sweeping and bagging leaves, debris, dirt and trash from roadways, sidewalks, parking lots, and transporting the trash to designated central collection points on a daily basis.
- Pressure washing horizontal, vertical, and overhead surfaces.
- Painting and striping parking and other surfaces.
- Ensures parking garage cleanliness of stairwells, elevator landings, and entrance vestibules.
- Ensures the proper use of hazard cleaning products. Safeguards storm drains from harmful waste runoff per the Clean Act.
- Safely operate light vehicles such as pick-up trucks, tractors, street sweepers or riding mowers and portable power tools and equipment such as saws, pressure washers, grass trimmers, snow/leaf blowers, sprayers, paint machines and other groundskeeping equipment by obeying applicable traffic laws and following operator instructions, and wearing appropriate safety items such as goggles, gloves, or other appropriate protective clothing.
- Assist in preventing accidents resulting from snow or ice covered walkways by removing mowing decks and installing snow removal equipment on riding mowers and tractors; installing snow removal equipment on trucks; operating snow blowers, tractors or mowers with blades and using shovels to remove snow and spread sand, salt and other substances on snow- or ice-covered surfaces.
- Participate in snow removal operations by operating a variety of general purpose, specialized, and heavy-duty vehicles such as pick-ups, stake beds, dump trucks, backhoes, loaders.
- Ensure that grounds maintenance equipment and building maintenance equipment are operational by performing routine and preventative maintenance and cleaning of tools, equipment and machines within reasonable capabilities.
- Performs routine and extensive preventative maintenance and repair procedures as directed on parking deck
- When weather or other conditions prohibit performance of the above duties:
- Replace and dispose of light bulbs in interior building settings using ladders, lifts, or other tools.
- Performs painting work in the preparation, patching, finishing, and maintaining of building structures, walls, woodwork, furniture, and equipment.
- Performs custodial services following established procedures and guidelines in buildings, offices, lavatories, restrooms, etc. including their furnishings, using manual tools and powered machines.
- Perform minor maintenance work using hand and power tools by making carpentry repairs such as nailing down loose boards, or replacing worn or rotten floor boards, performing minor plumbing repairs, and replacing defective electrical switches, light bulbs, fuses, and fluorescent ballasts.
- Prepare written materials (i.e., repair status, activity logs, etc.) for the purpose of documenting activities and/or conveying information.
- Inform management regarding procedures and/or status of work orders for the purpose of providing information for making decisions, taking appropriate action and/or complying with health and building regulations.
- Participate in meetings, workshops, training, and seminars, as assigned for the purpose of conveying and/or gathering information required to perform job functions.
- Prepare written materials (i.e., repair status, activity logs, etc.) for the purpose of documenting activities and/or conveying information.
- Request equipment and supplies for the purpose of maintaining inventory and ensuring availability of items required to complete the necessary installation and/or repair.
- Completes all work while exposed to loud noises, dirt, dust, tobacco smoke and foul odors
- Applies chemicals, as directed to clarify and sanitize fountain, and swimming pools, brushes and cleans all pool surfaces.
- Respond to emergency situations during and after his/her assigned work hours for the purpose of resolving immediate safety concerns.
- Transport a variety of tools, equipment and supplies for the purpose of ensuring the availability of materials required at job site.
- Maintain assigned vehicle, equipment, and tools for the purpose of ensuring availability in a safe operating condition.
- Research, requisition, store, safeguard, and properly use equipment, materials, and supplies.
- Work under limited supervision using standardized practices and/or methods; provide information and/or advise others; and operate within a defined budget. Utilization of some resources from other work units may be required to perform the job's functions.
- Remember and carry-out oral and written directions, tasks, and procedures.
- Demonstrate a positive and cooperative attitude; appropriate grooming and attire; and, effective work ethic.
- Work is characterized by the necessity for considerable physical exertion, by close daily contact with unpleasant materials.
- Lift, push, pull, and carry up to 50 pounds without assistance and 100 pounds with assistance.
- The job is frequently performed outdoors in extreme heat, cold, rain, snow, dusty and dirty environments.
- Exposure to buildings, facilities, and structures in which a variety of chemicals and lubricants are stored and used to operate, maintain, and repair tools and equipment.
- Ability to sit, stand, walk, stoop, crouch, squat, bend, kneel, crawl, reach overhead, and climb ladders, stairs, vertical steps, rungs, and mobile and fixed platforms to access buildings, rooms, confined spaces, roof tops, vehicles, and equipment for unspecified periods of time.
- The work area involves moderate discomfort and/or risk such as operating heavy machinery or dangerous equipment, or frequent exposure to hazardous materials. Alternatively, the work area may be subject to environmental discomfort such as poor ventilation. Loud noises, and/or extremes of heat or cold. The work often requires wearing protective gear that may be uncomfortable. The nature of the work environment may produce moderate levels of stress.
- Exposure to a variety of childhood and adult germs, and communicable and non-communicable diseases and illnesses.

Job Requirements: (please ensure you meet the listed requirements prior to applying)
- High School diploma or GED required or currently enrolled and successfully complete a GED program within six (6) months from start date as a condition of continued employment
- Must be twenty-one (21) years of age or older
- Skills: Be able to perform single, technical tasks with a need to occasionally upgrade skills in order to meet changing job conditions. Specific skill-based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: operating equipment used in the care and maintenance of facilities; planning and managing projects; preparing and maintaining accurate records; adhering to safety practices; and handling hazardous materials.
- Ensures the proper use of chemicals. Safeguards storm drains from harmful waste runoff per the Clean Act.
- Possess specific ability-based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include adapting to changing work priorities; communicating with diverse groups; meeting deadlines and schedules; working as part of a team; working independently and with interruptions; and complying with OSHA/Illinois 29 CFR Parts 1910 standards.
- Six (6) months of Commercial or Municipal grounds maintenance and/or landscaping experience-
required
- Must have a valid and current State Driver’s License and an insurable driving record for purposes of driving company vehicles as required
- Must have good hearing and eyesight
- Must have ability to read, write and understand English
- Willing to work odd and irregular hours including nights, weekends, and holidays
- Willing to travel and participate in training as recommended or required
- Must have an Occupational License (or the ability to obtain and maintain a license) pursuant to the Illinois Gaming Act and remain in good standing with the Illinois Gaming Board as a requirement for this position
