HVAC Technician
Status: Full Time, 40 Hours per week.
Division: Facilities.
Reports To: Directors of Facilities.
Supervises: N/A.
FLSA Status: Non-exempt.
Position Description:
An HVAC Technician is responsible for the installation, maintenance, and repair of heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) systems across campus facilities. This pivotal role ensures a comfortable and conducive environment for students, faculty, and staff by conducting regular inspections, diagnosing issues, and implementing effective HVAC solutions. The HVAC Technician collaborates closely with the maintenance team to contribute to the overall campus infrastructure and support a productive learning and working atmosphere.
Position Accountabilities and Essential Functions:
- Install, maintain, and repair HVAC systems, including heating units, air conditioning units, ventilation systems, and associated controls.
- Operate and troubleshoot building automation systems and controls.
- Tridium Niagara N4 or AX experience preferred.
- Schedule HVAC equipment on our BAS.
- Conduct routine inspections to identify potential HVAC problems and perform preventive maintenance to ensure optimal system performance.
- Diagnose HVAC malfunctions using specialized tools and equipment, and apply appropriate solutions to restore functionality.
- Collaborate with other maintenance and facilities staff to integrate HVAC work with broader campus operations seamlessly.
- Respond promptly to service requests, prioritize tasks, and complete assignments within established timelines.
- Participate in planning and execution of HVAC-related projects, coordinating efforts with supervisors and other trades for successful project outcomes.
- Stay current with industry advancements and best practices to enhance technical expertise and contribute to continuous improvement.
- Adhere to safety protocols and guidelines to create a secure environment for all occupants and personnel.
- Implement procedures and prioritize resources.
- Ensure the buildings and equipment are optimized to reduce energy consumption and are operating as efficiently as possible.
Qualifications:
- High school diploma or equivalent; completion of a recognized HVAC apprenticeship program is preferred.
- Valid HVAC technician's license or certification required.
- Demonstrated experience in HVAC installation, maintenance, and repair.
- Familiarity with relevant local and national HVAC codes and regulations.
- Proficiency in interpreting technical manuals and schematics.
- Skilled in using HVAC diagnostic tools and equipment.
- Strong problem-solving skills and attention to detail.
- Effective communication and collaborative abilities.
- Physical stamina and ability to work in various weather conditions.
- Flexibility to adjust work hours for emergency repairs or special projects.
Work Environment:
The work environment for an HVAC Technician is both diverse and dynamic. It encompasses indoor and outdoor settings across the campus. Indoor work involves navigating classrooms, laboratories, offices, and other campus spaces to maintain HVAC systems that contribute to a comfortable atmosphere. Outdoor tasks may include maintaining exterior HVAC equipment, troubleshooting units on rooftops, and addressing HVAC needs in outdoor facilities.
Physical Demands:
This position involves frequent physical activity, including standing, walking, bending, and lifting, often in confined spaces and at varying heights. Technicians must be able to lift and manipulate heavy equipment (50 lbs.) and components as well as work comfortably on ladders and elevated platforms. Visual acuity and color perception are essential for differentiating between wiring, components, and system indicators. The ability to work outdoors, occasionally in adverse weather conditions, is also required.
