Role Description
Galileo is hiring an experienced Machine Learning Research leader for the Head of Applied Research role, to help spearhead state-of-the-art ML research initiatives in the incredibly exciting space of Large Language Models. This key leadership position would entail leading Galileo's ML Research organization, and requires a strong background in advanced machine learning research, particularly in the area of LLMs.
In this role, you will be responsible for shaping and executing the research strategy, managing a team of top-tier ML research scientists, and collaborating with cross-functional teams to translate research into productionized evaluation metrics and product features.
Main Responsibilities
- Research & Development: Oversee and contribute to ambitious research projects, particularly in the development, training and trustworthy application of advanced language models. Stay at the forefront of machine learning advancements and ensure the team is leveraging the latest research while pushing boundaries in our field.
- Leadership and Strategy: Define and execute an ambitious research strategy, aligning it with Galileo's long-term vision as well as near term OKRs with a keen focus on productizing the research on a regular basis. Inspire and lead a team of research scientists, fostering a culture of innovation, rigor and excellence.
- Publication and Thought Leadership: Drive the publication of high-impact research papers and represent Galileo at top-tier conferences and industry events. Establish Galileo as a leader in the machine learning research community.
- Mentorship and Development: Mentor, develop and grow the research org, providing guidance and support to help team members achieve their professional goals. Foster an environment of continuous learning and professional growth.
Minimum Qualifications
- Experience: 6-10 years of experience in cutting-edge machine learning research, with a strong track record of leading ML innovation.
- Leadership: Proven experience in leading and managing research teams of 5-10 scientists, with at least 1-3 years of leadership experience in reputable research organizations.
- Technical Expertise: Deep expertise in building and training machine learning models, particularly language models. Proficiency in PyTorch and/or TensorFlow, or similar model frameworks is essential.
- Publications: A strong publication record in top-tier machine learning conferences and journals, demonstrating significant contributions to the field.
- Collaboration Skills: Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, with a demonstrated ability to collaborate effectively with remote/cross-functional teams.
- Education: A Ph.D. or MS in Computer Science, Machine Learning, or a related field is highly preferred, but exceptional candidates with equivalent experience will also be considered strongly.
