The life sciences are in the midst of a data revolution
Cheap and accurate genome sequencing is a reality, high-resolution imaging is becoming routine, and clinical data is increasingly stored in machine-readable formats
These breakthroughs have brought us to the threshold of a new era in biomedicine, one where the data sciences hold the potential to propel our understanding and treatment of human disease. The Broad Institute’s Data Sciences Platform sits at the center of this transformation
Our team is charged with building a suite of sophisticated software products to serve both the Institute and the world

Together, these activities make us a leading organization at the intersection of the life and data sciences. We are seeking a head of engineering to lead our software engineering teams in delivering high quality products to the biomedical research ecosystem
This person will be spearheading efforts on our flagship software products that sit at the intersection of advanced science and technology
These applications are used by thousands of researchers across the globe, processing petabytes of data, and regularly consuming millions of CPU-core-hours in a week
No medical, genomics, or scientific background is required, just a desire to be part of a mission led organization, an enthusiasm to transform the world of medicine, and the ability to lead, coach and mentor
Come be part of an incredible mission to help us chart this new course in biomedical research!Responsibilities: Lead the software engineering organization to effectively execute against their goals, identifying gaps and removing impediments Create a culture of proactively identifying and unblocking technical hurdles across engineering teams Represent engineering excellence by defining and encouraging industry-leading best practices Collaborate with product groups to define product roadmap, including technical investments, and foster a mindset of continuous improvement Build relationships and effectively partner with outside collaborators and industry partners on technical strategies and investments for our platforms Act as a technical brand ambassador for the group to continue to cultivate our external brand Maintain a hiring process which is able to attract and hire strong engineering talent Effectively grow the careers of the individual engineers within the organization Promote a culture which embodies our mission and values Work with leadership team to ensure appropriate engineering staffing across projects and productsRequirements: Bachelors in Computer Science, Engineering, or related field
Masters or PhD preferred 10+ years of technical leadership and people management experience, leading organizations of 40+ engineers and directly managing engineering managers. Technically proficient and able to lead by example to earn the respect of a senior development team Track record of delivering significant projects using a continuous SDLC (testing, integration, deployment) Experience working in a regulatory and security-driven environment such as healthcare or government Biased towards action and practical, incremental solutions Proven ability to build relationships, collaborate with and influence cross-functional teams across product-line boundaries Calm demeanor during stressful and complex situations Organized and self-directed leader Excellent written and verbal communication, problem solving, interpersonal, and time management skills.
